Here’s the back cover blurb!

With his clan’s welfare threatened by raiding parties during a harsh winter, Jareth rides to demand restitution from the neighboring first lord, not knowing he will meet the woman of his dreams. Taking her as part of the spoils, he hopes to make her his first lady, not realizing she is the daughter of the first lord. Tensions escalate between the two clans over this beautiful and fiery woman he must make his own.

Viviane, a young widow, is praying for an answer as she struggles to survive on her own after her husband’s death. The other option is to move back home, with her father, First Lord Herrick, of Clan Brannach. She is desperate for another option, for as the youngest daughter of the house, she can never be her own person there. Her prayers are answered when Jareth comes seeking justice for crimes against her clan. Hiding her true identity, she hopes to make a break with her past when she is chosen as part of the spoils.

Imagine her dismay when she discovers Jareth hopes to make her first lady of his clan.

Black and whiteIf not, get on over to FreedomInk and secure your copy.

Jareth, First Lord is a fantasy romance on a far away world. Think psychic highland lords, frigid winters, green forests, and rushing streams.

See Viviane, a first lord’s daughter, with black curls, startling blue eyes and a temper it will take a first lord to tame.

Take a brief peek–

There was something ruthless about him this evening, and the sense of power surrounding him was augmented and hinted at danger. Shortly after they left the house, they departed their usual route.

“Jareth, where are we going?”

“To walk in the house orchard. It’s quiet, beautiful in the moonlight, and private. We shouldn’t have an audience out there,” he answered without even slowing down.

“Audience for what?” she asked, but his only answer was a smile.

They strolled amongst the trees for a few minutes before he stopped to face her. “I love the way the moonlight shines on the silvery bark of these old trees. As a child, I used to pretend there was a magical realm out here, full of wonder and mystery. I thought if I looked hard enough, I’d see all sorts of strange creatures going about their business in this special place.” As he talked, his eyes took on the magic of the night, dark, bewitching, and dangerous.

Gnarled, twisted, and tangled, the old trees looked like a crazed wizard had got loose and created a chaotic maze. Mystically enchanting, it did seem as if something magical could happen at any moment, around any corner. Viviane felt the pulsing heartbeat of great but subtle power. Wherever it was, it added to the mystery of the night. Looking up into the sky through the branches, Viviane realized tonight wasn’t just another night. She called it to Jareth’s attention. As they watched, the two moons above were aligning. In a few moments, one would completely eclipse the other, and for a little while this evening, only one moon would grace the sky.

“‘In the heart of winter, the two become one, the past put to rest, the future begun,’” Jareth said, quoting the ancient legend. “Perhaps there is a reason we came here tonight,” he told her, his eyes staring intently into hers as if he could read her soul.”

Excerpt:

“Before you follow the breadcrumbs back to your rooms, may I tempt you with a glass of wine? It’s not late yet and there’s still a nice fire in the fireplace. It would be a shame to let it go to waste by not enjoying it,” he suggested.

“Lord Jareth, I don’t want to keep you from any business you have. You must be busy these days. You needn’t entertain me to the detriment of your estate or clan.”

She looked as if she would enjoy the fire, but was too shy to say so. Something must have reminded her of her late husband,  a deep sadness suddenly filled her eyes with tears. Jareth reached out to comfort her and she flinched at his touch.

“Viviane, I know how much grief you still carry. I would enjoy your company tonight, if you can manage,” he continued. “I keep my evenings free to unwind from the day. It has been most generous of you to share your evening, but if you feel you must leave, I’ll understand.”

Viviane stood motionless for a moment, tears threatening to spill over onto her face. Jareth was afraid she was going to run to her room, fling herself on the bed, and cry herself to sleep. For some reason, her emotion was affecting him more strongly than it should. Maybe it was the personal tragedies they shared.

“Thank you, milord, but spending another evening in tears won’t help anything, will it?” she replied, dabbing at the few tears which had escaped. “It hasn’t so far, anyway. Perhaps a glass of wine and a warm fire would be better, if you’re sure I won’t interrupt anything else you had to do.”

“Wine and a fire it is, Viviane. And no, crying yourself to sleep every night doesn’t help, though it sometimes seems you have no choice. I know how much it hurts, the loss. It gets easier to bear after a while. I don’t know that you miss them any less, but you find a way to live with it and move on.”

Black and whiteYes, we’re back home after a relaxing week in Brunswick, GA. It’s nice to have my one and only home for a while again.

And it’s another rainy day in Georgia, a good time for reading, writing and some snuggle time.

Keep watching for news on the re-release of Jareth: First Lord, scheduled for August. Newly edited and with a couple new chapters, Jareth: First Lord opens the door for the sequel, Viviane: First Lady, after the turn of the year.

Once again, I’ll be participating in the NaNoWriMo Camp in July. I’ll post my progress here as I wrestle with a new story.

Hope everyone is having a wonderful summer so far. Take care and play safely.

Mel and Gambler's FollyWell, I’m working in earnest on Master of the Fleet. I wrote 3300 words today trying to get Richard and Anne-Marie sorted. They finally made it to the Guild Master’s Masquerade–as the Winter Queen Mab and Oberon.

The second edition of Jareth: First Lord is with the editor. I’m chewing my nails waiting to get it back for edits and rewrites. I’ll keep you posted on its new release.

So while I work with Richard and Anne-Marie, and try to get Kerrick and Liora out of Wales and to safety, why don’t you go over and check out Gambler’s Folly?

A futuristic, paranormal fantasy romance, with kind of a dark underworld tone to it, Gambler’s Folly was on the top 10 and top 25 best sellers list for Mainstream M/F sensual romance at Bookstrand for several months after its release.

It is also on display at Expo 2014 in New York this month.

mem-gamblersfolly1Well, now I have two novels started. Which one should I finish first?

I started Master of the Fleet earlier in the year and wrote around 70,000 words on it. Then Camp 2014 came along and I decided 40,000 words would be way too many for this book, so I began writing on another idea–The Seduction of Lady Calloway. It is now around 46,000 words.

So I think I’ll go ahead and finish Master of the Fleet first, since it’s nearer completion. Once the first draft is finished, I’ll go back to Lady Calloway and see if I can get Kerrick and Liora out of Wales.

Jareth: First Lord, second edition, is with the editor now and should come out later this year. And right behind it, the sequel, Viviane: First Lady will follow.

But while you’re waiting for these to come out, check out Gambler’s Folly.  A futuristic, paranormal fantasy romance, this story is set on the pleasure paradise, Gambler’s Folly.

Here’s an excerpt for you.

For the first time, Karianna got a look at Damiano Leone, said to
be the most powerful, dangerous man in the underworld. Tall and
dark, in a Mediterranean way, he was dressed impeccably. Dark gray
jacket and trousers were paired with a black silk shirt, gray tie, and
ruby tie pin. His hair, nearly black, was moderately short and wavy,
but his eyes captured her attention. Instead of dark brown, or maybe
blue, they were a dark, stormy gray, the color of the Great Lakes just
before a storm.
Then there was the apple. As he came into view, he was polishing
a large, red apple on his lapel. Without a word to her, he took a bite of
the apple, as his eyes swept up and down her body.
Munching his apple, he walked slowly around her, about two
meters away, his eyes taking in every detail, as she stood immobilized
by the restraints. Finally, to break the silence, she asked, “What are
you doing?” After which she thought it a really dumb question.
Finishing his bite of apple, he simply replied, “Admiring my new
acquisition.”
As he continued his survey, all Kari could think about was how
dowdy she must look compared to everyone else around him. The
plain red dress she wore had been one of her best. Made of synthetic
silk, the dress was blousy in the bust and gathered at her waist by a
wide, black belt, with a large silver-tone buckle, now ruined and
hanging by the belt loops. The dress had been ripped down the front
during the previous struggles, exposing her body down to the waist.
The side slit had torn most of the way to her waist, too, so it covered
next to nothing.
“Not bad. Not bad at all,” she heard him say. Finished with his
walk-around and his apple, he threw the apple core in the bin,
carefully wiped his hands on a small white towel, and turned back
toward Kari.
As she watched, he took something from his trousers pocket. With
a small click, a long, slim blade appeared in his hand. His eyes held
hers as he slowly advanced toward her.
“What are you doing?” she asked in a panic. “I haven’t done
anything to you. Just let me go, and I swear, I’ll never say a word
about any of this. Please!”

Black and whiteYes! I’ve reached my word goal of 40,000 words for Camp NaNoWriMo 2014. I’ve made it!

No, the book isn’t’ finished yet, but  with 40,000 words as a start, it shouldn’t take long to finish. And then there is the editing, rewrites, and all of that. But finishing it is the first order of business.

The Seduction of Lady Calloway is a fantasy romance set in an alternate timeline in London, around 1850. The church and state are one organization with two different branches–one for clerical administration and the other for secular affairs.

Kerrick Calloway works as a liaison between the two divisions. Recently married to Liora,  a delightful girl from further north, imagine his shock when he finds out she was raised a heretic.

So what does one who is employed by the church do in this situation? He won’t subject his wife to the confessors unless forced, but in the meantime, can he bring her back to the church?

Sound like something you’d like? Well, keep your eyes on this blog for news of releases. A second edition of Jareth: First Lord should be out later this year, followed by the sequel, Viviane: First Lady.

Gambler’s Folly

Paranormal fantasy romance, M/F, Mainstream Sensual

What was there about him that attracted her so much? He was
charming, handsome, and strong. She had known other men who had
those qualities, but she’d never felt that way toward them. Maybe it
was his confidence, or his even temper. That and his scent. Whatever
it was, it was aggressively sensuous. Nearly irresistible, it toyed with
her senses on some primal level.
That could have been part of her reaction, she thought. Holding
her so closely, touching her, kissing her, his scent was overwhelming.
No wonder she couldn’t think straight. And right this minute, the car
was filled with it, the indisputable male-in-rut scent that was
Damiano.
“Cara, what are you thinking?” he asked quietly.
“I’m wondering what I’m going to do about you,” she answered.

Excerpt from Gambler’s Folly

mem-gamblersfolly

“Where in the hell…” she began as Trae entered the room,
followed by two well-built men in expensively tailored suits. “Trae,
what’s going on? Who are these guys?”
“Hi, sweetheart. These men are associates of Mr. Leone. They’ve
come to take you to him.”
“Take me to—Mr. Leone? The biggest mob boss on the planet?”
“Um, yeah. I kind of lost a bet. Sorry.”
“You lost a bet? What kind of bet? What have you done, Trae
O’Brien?”
“Well, you won’t have to worry about the house anymore, or the
car, or really anything. I lost all of it. Then, in order to get out from
under that and a M1,000,000 debt, he insisted I put you on the table,
as it were. Win or lose, one hand, and all my debts were gone. Just if I
lost, he got you. And I lost. Sorry.”
“Sorry? Sorry?! You’re more than sorry, Trae. What the hell?”
she shouted, as one of the impeccably dressed men took her arm.
“Come along, Mrs. O’Brien. Mr. Leone is waiting.”
“I’m not going anywhere with you. Get your hands off me!”
As she struggled with one man, the other one found her purse, and
checked for her passport and papers. Speaking into what must have
been a wrist transceiver, man number two said, “We have the lady.
Mr. O’Brien will be right down to sign the papers.”
“Papers? What papers, Trae?”
The older of the two men smiled and said, “The ones signing
away his rights to you, love. Come along.”
“Trae? Trae!”
Downstairs, watching her husband sign away his debts, Karianna
was numb. How could this even be legal? Did it matter when you
were dealing with the mob?

Pushing the signed papers across the table, Trae said, “Well, that’s
that I guess. You’re sure we’re good?”
“Mr. Leone was very clear about it. One hand, win or lose, all
debts forgiven.”
“What about me?” Kari asked, in shock. “What am I supposed to
do?”
The man in the shadows was quiet for a moment, and then said,
“Go ahead and take her downstairs, to one of the special guest rooms.
Mr. Leone will see her there and decide what to do with her.”
Entering the elevator, one of her escorts used a pass card to select
a private underground floor. From what she’d heard about the place,
the lower-level suites were exclusive and outrageously expensive.
The suite they opened for her certainly bore that out. Stepping
onto the lush carpet was like stepping onto a cloud. Hidden mood
lighting around the perimeter of the ceiling lit the area evenly, while
the trickling water in a small fountain created a gentle background
sound. Live plants grew under specialized lights and the scent in the
air was soothing.
“Just relax, have a drink if you wish. Mr. Leone will be here
shortly,” one of the men told her. And then they were gone.
Turning back toward the door, Karianna tried the latch, just for the
sake of trying. Locked. For all the creature comforts and beauty in the
room, it was really just a cushy cell. But she didn’t intend to stay here
any longer than she had to. Chances were good that, if she could reach
the elevator, she could get back to the lobby. Usually pass cards were
needed only to enter a floor, not to leave it. Now, what could she use
as a weapon?
As the door opened, she tensed, ready to make her escape.
Unfortunately, Mr. Leone had come prepared. The first bodyguard
easily caught the floor lamp she swung at him and set it on the floor
beside the door.
“Restraints,” she heard someone say. After a struggle with both
bodyguards, Karianna found she was snugly restrained between two
poles, clothes torn and disheveled. While she’d been looking over the
room, she’d thought they were for in-room entertainment. She now
saw they were equipped for hand and ankle restraints. Soft and
cushioned, the restraints were nevertheless effective. Adjustable stops
kept her from sliding the restraints up and down, holding her firmly in
place, exactly as she was.
“Thank you, gentlemen,” she heard the voice say. It was a deep,
dark, sensual voice which made her spine tingle. “We’ll be fine now.”
“Yes, Mr. Leone. Have a pleasant evening,” she heard one of the
bodyguards answer. The door opened, closed, and she was alone with
a man many had reason to fear.
