Excerpt from Gambler’s Folly

mem-gamblersfolly

“Where in the hell…” she began as Trae entered the room,
followed by two well-built men in expensively tailored suits. “Trae,
what’s going on? Who are these guys?”
“Hi, sweetheart. These men are associates of Mr. Leone. They’ve
come to take you to him.”
“Take me to—Mr. Leone? The biggest mob boss on the planet?”
“Um, yeah. I kind of lost a bet. Sorry.”
“You lost a bet? What kind of bet? What have you done, Trae
O’Brien?”
“Well, you won’t have to worry about the house anymore, or the
car, or really anything. I lost all of it. Then, in order to get out from
under that and a M1,000,000 debt, he insisted I put you on the table,
as it were. Win or lose, one hand, and all my debts were gone. Just if I
lost, he got you. And I lost. Sorry.”
“Sorry? Sorry?! You’re more than sorry, Trae. What the hell?”
she shouted, as one of the impeccably dressed men took her arm.
“Come along, Mrs. O’Brien. Mr. Leone is waiting.”
“I’m not going anywhere with you. Get your hands off me!”
As she struggled with one man, the other one found her purse, and
checked for her passport and papers. Speaking into what must have
been a wrist transceiver, man number two said, “We have the lady.
Mr. O’Brien will be right down to sign the papers.”
“Papers? What papers, Trae?”
The older of the two men smiled and said, “The ones signing
away his rights to you, love. Come along.”
“Trae? Trae!”
Downstairs, watching her husband sign away his debts, Karianna
was numb. How could this even be legal? Did it matter when you
were dealing with the mob?

Pushing the signed papers across the table, Trae said, “Well, that’s
that I guess. You’re sure we’re good?”
“Mr. Leone was very clear about it. One hand, win or lose, all
debts forgiven.”
“What about me?” Kari asked, in shock. “What am I supposed to
do?”
The man in the shadows was quiet for a moment, and then said,
“Go ahead and take her downstairs, to one of the special guest rooms.
Mr. Leone will see her there and decide what to do with her.”
Entering the elevator, one of her escorts used a pass card to select
a private underground floor. From what she’d heard about the place,
the lower-level suites were exclusive and outrageously expensive.
The suite they opened for her certainly bore that out. Stepping
onto the lush carpet was like stepping onto a cloud. Hidden mood
lighting around the perimeter of the ceiling lit the area evenly, while
the trickling water in a small fountain created a gentle background
sound. Live plants grew under specialized lights and the scent in the
air was soothing.
“Just relax, have a drink if you wish. Mr. Leone will be here
shortly,” one of the men told her. And then they were gone.
Turning back toward the door, Karianna tried the latch, just for the
sake of trying. Locked. For all the creature comforts and beauty in the
room, it was really just a cushy cell. But she didn’t intend to stay here
any longer than she had to. Chances were good that, if she could reach
the elevator, she could get back to the lobby. Usually pass cards were
needed only to enter a floor, not to leave it. Now, what could she use
as a weapon?
As the door opened, she tensed, ready to make her escape.
Unfortunately, Mr. Leone had come prepared. The first bodyguard
easily caught the floor lamp she swung at him and set it on the floor
beside the door.
“Restraints,” she heard someone say. After a struggle with both
bodyguards, Karianna found she was snugly restrained between two
poles, clothes torn and disheveled. While she’d been looking over the
room, she’d thought they were for in-room entertainment. She now
saw they were equipped for hand and ankle restraints. Soft and
cushioned, the restraints were nevertheless effective. Adjustable stops
kept her from sliding the restraints up and down, holding her firmly in
place, exactly as she was.
“Thank you, gentlemen,” she heard the voice say. It was a deep,
dark, sensual voice which made her spine tingle. “We’ll be fine now.”
“Yes, Mr. Leone. Have a pleasant evening,” she heard one of the
bodyguards answer. The door opened, closed, and she was alone with
a man many had reason to fear.

CommercialIt is finally snowing in Georgia and the grandsons are thrilled. School was cancelled this morning because of the forecast, though it didn’t actually start snowing until just a few minutes ago–around 2 pm this afternoon.

Not a lot of snow, just little whispers falling to the ground where it clings to the leaves and dead clumps of grass from autumn. The sidewalk is wet so far, but I think that will turn to ice later on in the day.

The temperature was about 37 mid-morning, but has dropped to 31, so I think the boys will probably be home again tomorrow.

The humorous bit about the weather in Georgia is its changeability. Yesterday it was a balmy 64 out on my front porch and it was still in the 40’s when I went to bed.

It’s a good day to sit down by a warm fire with a good book to read. I’ve been working on my next novel in the 32 day writing challenge.

But until this one is finished, go pick up a copy of Gambler’s Folly, which won me not only the BBFBP award for Most Artistic 2013, but also the Mulitfaceted Jewel award, from FreedomInk.

You can find it on Amazon:

Talk to you again soon. I’m going to go watch the snow.

mem-gamblersfollySo, is anyone else out there in Georgia about to freeze to death? About two weeks ago the temperatures were in the 70’s and 80’s. Now all of a sudden it’s 52 F. My poor chickens are wishing they could grow feathers faster.

But on these chilly nights, it nice to be sitting by the fire, a cup of cocoa on the table next to you while you read your favorite book.

Have you tried Gambler’s Folly yet?

If not, wander on over to Bookstrand or Amazon to get your copy of my paranormal fantasy romance.  Then get comfortable under a nice fluffy throw, get that cuppa something warm to drink and settle in for a little romance.

Here’s an excerpt for you.

It was entirely too early when Damiano woke her the next morning. Karianna had no idea when she’d finally gone to sleep, but she didn’t feel rested.

“Come on, Kari,” she heard him say, “If you want coffee before your workout, you should get out of bed.”

Not Carl, not today, she thought. She had one man who was overwhelmingly attentive to her, and one who was a fiend in the gym. Between the two of them, she was going to go mad.

“Some honeymoon,” she murmured to herself.

“We can relax and have fun later,” she heard right next to her. Opening her eyes, she saw Damiano, in black silk pajama pants and no shirt, stretched out on her bed. Head propped up on his hand, he had an amused smile, as he watched the succession of expressions on her face. “When you decide what to do, cara, let me know,” he said. “But if you choose coffee and Carl, you should get up soon.”

“What are my other choices?” she asked grumpily.

“You have two choices, mia amore. Your husband or Carl.”

“And if I choose my husband?” she asked.

“Well, then we can stay in bed for a while and see what happens. Like this.” He reached over lazily and slowly drew the sheets from her body. “Nice, cara. So lovely on you,” he commented on the wisp of sheer lace she’d worn to bed. The only lingerie she had was ideal for newlyweds, and very sensual even then.

His eyes slowly moved down her body, taking in the sight. While she tried to sort out her feelings, his hand found the slit in the side of the gown, caressed her thigh, and then swept up and over her behind. Moving closer, he cushioned her head on his arm and slowly kissed her.

Now thoroughly awake with her body at full alert, she knew exactly what she wanted. She wasn’t sure if it was what she should do, though. Part of her was shocked that she would even consider sleeping with this man. Of course, it was difficult to reason with a strong, warm hand taking a tour of her body, having now reached her breast. They were married, after all, she thought, and Trae was gone. It wouldn’t be cheating. Besides, she was stuck with him for two years and he was attractive, to say the least. She might as well get something out of the arrangement.

Damiano decided to help her make up her mind by tracing her ear with his tongue, nibbling her ear lobe and leaving a trail of tiny kisses down her throat. His hand massaged her stomach and abdomen, then pressed in deeply, to massage just below her navel. The explosion of white-hot energy sent her right over the edge.

As her arms reached up to pull him to her, her mouth sought his hungrily, like someone who’d been starved nearly to death invited to a banquet.

“Slowly, cara. We have all morning,” he said, gently taking her in hand, while teasing her even more.

Ciao for now amici miei–
