December is here, and that means most of us will be buying gifts for friends and family. I always enjoyed receiving gifts which would last, that I could keep and enjoy for years to come. One of my favorites was a good book. I still have books from when I was in grade school. And that’s been a while. I also have one of my favorites that I bought for  25 cents at a thrift store one summer, By Right of Conquest, by Arthur Hornblow. It is a romance from another era, copyright 1909. I’ve moved this book from Ohio to California, Oregon to Georgia, and everywhere in between. Every couple of years or so, I dust it  off and enjoy the journey once more.

Why not find a good book for the readers on your list this year?  There are a lot of them out there, for readers of every kind. And if you simply must have something electronic, check out some of the e-readers available. My husband enjoys being able to take his library with him when he travels for work. Since he may be gone for weeks or months at a time, having a good selection of reading material with him helps pass the time in foreign climes.  As a nurse, our daughter enjoys having something small to take with her if she’s sitting up all night with a patient. And our grandson just likes his Kindle because its cool.

Check out the books on Amazon.com. You can buy electronic versions of many favorites, lend them to others, or just check them out of the library. Or if you’re like me and savor the feel of a good book in your hands, you can get those as well.

While you’re there, check out my stories at:

Have fun shopping.  Keep safe and have a wonderful holiday.

My sweet friend for 13 years, Squeak

My sweet friend for 13 years, Squeak

Today has been a bit traumatic. For 13 years we’ve had a dear, sweet furry friend in our house.  He wasn’t too big, maybe a little overweight, but at 14 pounds he wasn’t so large physically.  His personality filled our world, but today he is gone.

We first met him when he appeared on our front porch, pawing through the trash for something to eat.  He was so cute, we decided to give him a home with us.  As a youngster he was clumsy, falling off of everything, including the top of the refrigerator. But his heart was always warm and loving.  He was kind and generous with his love, with gray tabby fur which, in  certain light, had a greenish tint to it. His jowly face and long fangs lent him a slightly comic air which went well with his personality.

As he grew, so did his love for us and ours for him. Though he got bigger, his voice did not. Hence the name Squeak, which was the only sound he ever made, except for his big happy purr. He got along well with all the other members of the household  and made himself right at home. He had his own bed, his own rug–a round, shaggy, blue one–and his own food bowl. Of them all, the blue rug was the one thing he did not share. What he would have done without it, I don’t know.  It was a bed, a toy, a security blanket all wrapped in one. It had been repaired and patched so many times it was nearly ready for the trash. But because he loved it so much, I always mended it one more time.

Squeak made a lot of friends in his life. Our grandsons adored him and the doctors and staff of the Commerce Veterinary Hospital have loved and cared for him during most of his life. Whenever I had to be away, he boarded there with his friends.  We thank them for their kindness and generosity toward him and for the sympathy they have expressed on his passing. I know they will miss him nearly as much as we do.

It’s hard to say why our pets have such a profound effect on our lives.  Is it simply the amount of time we have with them before they pass on? Is it their presence throughout our days which gives us comfort when we’re down? Maybe it’s all their little quirks which make us laugh or the way they always sleep on that one corner of the bed. Perhaps it’s their willingness to sit with us when we’re ill and need  comfort.

Squeak had all those attributes and more. He slept with me when I was recovering from chemotherapy. His needs, even though they were just food and water,  forced me to make my way at least as far as the kitchen each day. And since I was there already, I would get a glass of water and maybe a snack to keep me going. When my husband was gone for business, I at least had my big furry friend to keep me company, with a personality as big as the whole outdoors.

I will miss my friend Squeak, with all his little foibles. I know that wherever he is, he is finished with the pain and discomfort he’s felt  while fighting the infection that finally took his life. Knowing this, however, doesn’t fill the hole in my heart or dry my tears. It doesn’t keep my husband from looking over to  where Squeak always slept, expecting to see him there. It won’t help the sense of loss we’ll  feel as we dig his grave and bury him beside other friends who passed over before him.

Is it silly to get so attached to a pet? Some will say, yes. And there are times, like tonight, when I wish I could stay aloof in my humanity and not give those ‘lesser beings’ such a place in my heart. But I can’t. They, in their very own way, share their heart and world with me. How can I do less?

Tonight we say goodbye to an old and dear friend, Squeak. Wherever you are, you big sweet love, take care and have fun. And remember, catnip makes you silly, so use in moderation.

A piu tardi, amico mio.

With winter really beginning to show, it’s easier to come into the office and sit down to write for a while. Gambler’s Folly is coming along nicely, as is the non-fiction story of my fight with breast cancer. My cat likes to come in and supervise from my husband’s chair. At least that’s what I think he’s trying to do, though he usually looks like he’s asleep. Just now he’s having a few problems with infected toes, so once he’s in the chair he’s down for the count.
We talk over story ideas, like how to get my hero out of the predicament he’s managed at this point. The cat listens intently, shrugs his shoulders and yawns. I don’t think he’s really into this story at all. Or maybe he’s hinting that I’m smart enough to figure it out on my own. I mean, really, if you’re asking the cat, there is an issue greater than the story.

I’m sure it will all work out in the end. Gambler’s Folly will be finished soon and into the real work–making my ramblings into something resembling a crafted tale. The cat’s toes will be better after he finishes his antibiotics and he’ll be able to get in and out of the chair himself.
And I feel certain that, after he feels better, he’ll really like Gambler’s Folly and be willing to put just a little more effort into it for me, give it just that little twist of magic it needs from my favorite feline. So I’ll talk to all of you later. Time to get the cat and get to work.

After a week of chilly, wintry temperatures down here, we’ve had a break today, with highs around 70.  I know, for those of you in the north and Rocky mountain regions, the temperatures we’ve had all week were warm by comparison. But this is the first year in a long time I’ve had to actually build an evening fire in October.

But with the respite from the cold today, at least this afternoon,  we had a reminder that winter is on the way and it’s time to get all those things done outside. Make sure the firewood is covered, get the larger logs split before you really need them and mulch all those lovely plants so they’ll survive the cold later, while you’re inside drinking cocoa and reading a good book by that fire.

I enjoy the changing seasons. Winter gives me the time to do some of the other things I enjoy, like baking whole grain bread, simmering vegetable soups all afternoon so the flavors  blend deliciously, and making banana nut bread for the boys to enjoy, when they come in from the outdoors. All those wonderful kitchen things which are so very much too warm  in the summer’s heat.

So I think I’ll give Gambler’s Folly a miss for today. I can write some more on it tomorrow. But for today, I’ll go outside and see what I can do in the sun, before the cold comes back for the winter.

If you’re looking for something to read, check out some of my books on amazon. They go well with cocoa and a fire….

With the temperatures the past couple of days, winter is definitely thinking about making an appearance. Of course my cats, Squeak and Fogg, would tell you it is already here. But then they love to just soak up the warmth from the fire.

We actually built our first  fire last evening. After daytime temperatures in the 70’s three days ago dropping to highs in the 50’s, the change is quite a shock to the system. The dog (alright the small 105 pound pony)  is trying to convince me that he would be just fine in the house. No, he really wouldn’t chase the cats. Honest. Well, not much….

So I think it’s time to settle comfortably into the office chair, with a cup of steaming tea, and see what’s happening with my latest cast of characters on Gambler’s  Folly, Damiano and Karianna.

Good-bye for now. Get yourself a cuppa and a good book. Why not try Jareth: First Lord?

I’ve had some questions about Jareth and the Talents. What are the Talents and where do they come from? If you read the prologue, you read that Esperance was discovered by remote-viewing, the ability to view distant places psychically. This is one of the Talents the First Lords develop as descendants of the Seekers.

But what are the Talents? They can include nearly anything. A master musician who can sway an audience with his performance can be a Talent. An energy healer is a Talent. Anyone who seems to more connected to his or her craft than is normal could be a Talent.

Some of the Talents are empaths, who can tune into someone else’s emotions. Some are telepaths, who either read the thoughts of others, can send thoughts to others, or who can do both.

Usually, Wild Talents have only one enhanced ability. The First Lords on the other hand, since they are the closest descendants of the Seekers, have abilities in many areas which have been exercised and trained since childhood. This is what gives them the insight and strength to rule their clans.

But for more information on the Talents, watch for the debut of the second book in the series, Viviane: First Lady. This book begins with Jareth and Viviane’s marriage and continues through discovering and training her Talents.

Hope this helps those of you who are confused.

Okay, so I really should be inside working on Gambler’s Folly. Instead, I’m taking the day off to enjoy the beautiful day. Winter will be here soon, with all the rain and cold and I’ll have plenty of time indoors. I can rationalize this by promising I’ll think about Damiano and Karianna while I walk, right?

Anyway, if the weather is wonderful where you are, go for a walk in nature. let those five senses you have savor the moment. And this evening, if you need something to read, give my novel, Jareth: First lord a chance. http://www.createspace.com/4010036

What next?

Now that Jareth: First Lord is up and selling, it’s time to make a decision. Should I go ahead and finish polishing the second book in the series, or get the first book in a different series ready for print?

The new series is, again, a romantic fantasy, set on a world which is the pleasure capitol of the galaxy. Sort of like Vegas, Atlantic City and Monte Carlo all rolled in to one. An added draw is that it is a perfect vacation spot for outdoor lovers, too, with sand and sky, skiing and nearly anything else your heart could desire.

Meet our new hero and heroine, Damiano and Karianna and follow their story of gambling, love and a whole lot more. Read an excerpt at:  https://sites.google.com/site/melliemiller/

Coming soon!

Don’t forget to look at Jareth: First Lord
