Well, sometimes it seems like I’m waging a war. These characters of mine and their stubborn tendency to remake the story in their image….
While I’m working on this month’s Camp NaNoWriMo project, I thought I would give you a taste of April’s novel. It still has work to be done, like editing–but I’d like to share a little bit about it anyway.

The Seduction of Lady Calloway
In an alternate timeline in England, Lord Kerrick Calloway’s wife has become a problem. The government in Europe is run by the church. As liaison between the church and the state, Kerrick must follow the church’s law explicitly.
How could he know, before their marriage, that his wife, Liora, had been raised in heresy? Following church rulings concerning sex and marriage changed at least a century out of date, she seldom agreed to sleep with him.
As a descendant of a line of confessors, Kerrick knew what would happen to her if this knowledge came to the attention of the church. He also knew what they would do to him if he didn’t bring her to the church to confess.
In an attempt to save his wife and his life, Kerrick takes her away to an isolated family counry home for a time of study and seduction. His hope is to win her over to the new teachings of the church, root out the heresy in the little village where she grew up, and finally have a wife who could enjoy being with him.
Liora is terrified by the thought of having sex with her new husband. Handsome, well-situated, and kind, she finds it nearly impossible not to enjoy being with him. But since she firmly believes that enjoying sex, even with her husband, is no different than being a prostitute, she finds it more and more difficult to give her body to him without sinning.
It’ll be easy, she’d been told. It isn’t really enjoyable for women anyway. Just let him have you when he must and you can at least save his soul by keeping him in the marriage bed.
But how could she give herself to him to save his soul without consigning hers to hell?

Everyone has a story. And some of us choose to share. Some write non-fiction from their own lives, others write non-fiction of other kinds. And some of us write fiction and make it up as we go along.
Whatever story you decide to tell is up to you.
And that’s where National Novel Writing Month comes in. With two summer virtual camps and the big event in November, it is a wonderful aid to get started and keep writing for an entire month. You set your own goals and use your stats page to keep track of your progress.
There are all kinds of tools to help you on your journey on the resources page, as well as forums to answer questions or simply interact with other writers.
There is also a Young Writers Program for teachers and students, and the Come In Library program.
To top it off, NaNoWiMo is a nonprofit organization.
And that’s where you come in. It takes funds to keep all this going. The people you help are the writers of tomorrow.
If you can lend a hand, know that it will be put to good use and greatly appreciated. Here is a link to my fundraiser page.

“Aaaarrrgggghhh! You can’t do that! Not to my baby!” she cries.
That would be me or any other author out there who’s just seen the red ink all over their newly edited manuscript.
If you’re self publishing, I want you to give serious thought to hiring an editor to look over your work. Not because your story isn’t a great read, but because an editor can take that great read and make it sparkle. Your tension draws the readers in, but your editor can make the air crackle from the electricity in the air.
Yes, as an author, it is hard to send your newborn book to someone who will pull out a sharp knife and slice into it, amputating some parts and modifying others. And when you look over the manuscript initially, your heart will want to bleed red ink in sympathy.
But once you get past the shock and horror and begin to read your book with the edits in place, you’ll understand the difference between a good story and a great one.
If you’re like me, you get stuck in certain word patterns or using particular modifiers. You’ll catch some of them as you do your own editing, but not all. After all, you wrote these words and sometimes it’s difficult to read the story as your audience will.
Or you’ll write something, feeling certain your audience will understand the reference, without realizing you forgot to fill them in on this bit of back story.
Your editor will catch this and go, “Where the hell did this come from?” Maybe not in so many words, but they’ll make a note of it and ask for clarification.
I’ve worked with the Dawn Miller of RuleBreaker Editing for quite a while now. She’s edited all of my books, as well as documents for my husband. Gambler’s Folly wouldn’t be the story it is without her.
Neither would Jareth: First Lord, do to be re-released in August.
And you know she’s going through Viviane: First Lady right now, so I can send it to my publisher, FreedomInk365, later this year.
If you’re a first time author, especially if you’re self-publishing, get yourself an editor. Some of them have discounts for new authors. Others, like RuleBreaker Editing, will edit your first chapter for you for free, so you can see what they can do for you.
Yes, you’ll want to cry that first time. Yes, your manuscript will bleed red ink. But you’ll both get over it.
Editors. Those people we love to hate, but who make such a difference in the end.
Check it out!

Yes, we’re back home after a relaxing week in Brunswick, GA. It’s nice to have my one and only home for a while again.
And it’s another rainy day in Georgia, a good time for reading, writing and some snuggle time.
Keep watching for news on the re-release of Jareth: First Lord, scheduled for August. Newly edited and with a couple new chapters, Jareth: First Lord opens the door for the sequel, Viviane: First Lady, after the turn of the year.
Once again, I’ll be participating in the NaNoWriMo Camp in July. I’ll post my progress here as I wrestle with a new story.
Hope everyone is having a wonderful summer so far. Take care and play safely.
A tardi amici…

Yes, there’s a new kid on the block in the editing world–RuleBreaker Editing. This lady has edited all of my novels, including Gambler’s Folly, and one non-fiction book. I don’t know what I’d do without her.
And she’s finally decided to offer her talents to the rest of the writing world. She can help you on several different levels, from basic spelling and grammar to line by line editing.
She can be tough, but she will help you whip that book into shape before you send it off for submission.
So if you’re a new author, or an indie author, or someone looking for a different approach, check out RuleBreaker Editing.

I have one of my books with her right now–Viviane: First Lady, the sequel to Jareth: First Lord. I’m sure she’ll catch all those weird little things I’ve missed and help make it the book it should be.

Yes, the re-release of Jareth: First Lord by FreedomInk Publishing is getting closer. Newly edited with added chapters Jareth is more compelling than before.
And with a bit of luck, the sequel, Viviane: First lady, will be out later this year, too.
Jareth: First Lord is M/F mainstream fantasy romance, with a hint of the paranormal, on a world far in the future. I like to call it a future historical, as it combines elements of the highlands on a colony world left to swing in the breeze by mother earth.
And who is our protagonist? Jareth of course!
“A group of horses wheeled around the far corner under the standard of Clan Brannach. Clouds of steam rose from their bodies and breath as they champed at their bits. As they moved closer the armed men mounted on the huge beasts became visible. First Lord Jareth suddenly drew his huge bay stallion to a halt in the middle of the square. With a harsh, angry glare, his glance swept the area as if searching, with his eyes penetrating every nook and cranny.
Tall and broad shouldered, every inch a warrior lord, the handsome man of thirty-something rode as if born in the saddle. Dark as night, with his black hair blown by the wind, Lord Jareth’s eyes were twin pools of darkness beneath his angry frown. Hard as iron and cold as the icy winter winds, his presence was unsettling. As she watched, Jareth’s glance seemed suddenly to focus on her alone, pinning her in place with an energy and intent strong enough to be a living force.”
And what of his lady love, the Lady Viviane?
“Jareth once again felt the strange spider on his brain which he’d sensed in the village. Searching the group before him, he was drawn to cascades of black curls shimmering in the soft morning light. About twenty feet away, she was comforting others with a touch or quick hug. Her concern impressed him. As she turned to face him, her dazzling blue eyes captivated his heart.
Regaining his senses, he threaded his way through the crowd. As he drew closer her eyes sparkled like the blue waters of a mountain stream in the sun. Lush dark lashes framed them perfectly in contrast to her lovely, creamy skin. Her mouth was a perfect rosebud begging to be kissed, like a fairy princess come to life. Expecting fear or anger as he approached, all he saw was inner strength shining through sadness. He cultivated his imposing presence, but she rose tall and met his gaze.”
And when the wills of two very strong people clash, fireworks ensue.
So watch for Jareth: First Lord, from FreedomInk Publishing. While you’re waiting check out their other authors and books.

Well, I’m working in earnest on Master of the Fleet. I wrote 3300 words today trying to get Richard and Anne-Marie sorted. They finally made it to the Guild Master’s Masquerade–as the Winter Queen Mab and Oberon.
The second edition of Jareth: First Lord is with the editor. I’m chewing my nails waiting to get it back for edits and rewrites. I’ll keep you posted on its new release.
So while I work with Richard and Anne-Marie, and try to get Kerrick and Liora out of Wales and to safety, why don’t you go over and check out Gambler’s Folly?
A futuristic, paranormal fantasy romance, with kind of a dark underworld tone to it, Gambler’s Folly was on the top 10 and top 25 best sellers list for Mainstream M/F sensual romance at Bookstrand for several months after its release.
It is also on display at Expo 2014 in New York this month.

Gambler’s Folly is available as an eBook at:

And as an eBook and in print at:

So wish me luck as I go back to Master of the Fleet and try to sort out my characters. And give Gambler’s Folly a read.
