I know. It has been a while, but we’ve been having internet issues. Hopefully everything is a little better now. I don’t think it’s fixed completely, but we can usually get online.

So, how about an excerpt from The Russian–the next book from Gambler’s Folly?

First, the blurb.

He is Dmitri Ivanovich Volkov, a wolf-shifter often referred to as The Russian. Born over five hundred years ago, he has been a lone wolf since his soulmate died in his arms. Since then he has avoided long-term relationships. But maybe the universe is giving him a second chance at happiness.

Danni works for The Agency in Speranza on Gambler’s Folly. Most of her time is spent working or caring for her mother. She’d been lucky up until now, but tonight she’s accosted by one of the street gangs and is sure she’ll soon be dead.

Until The Russian steps in, saves her life, and captures her soul.

And now an excerpt:

“Oh, Mishka! What a day.” Kari handed her a tissue to mop up the tears trickling down her face.

“Indeed. Let’s go have lunch with these monkeys, before we head off for our honeymoon. It’ll give you a chance to share the day with your mother. It’s good to see her this happy.”

And it was. She couldn’t remember the last time her mother had smiled, genuinely smiled. For her, it was like the sun had finally broken from behind the clouds to light her day. Sliding into the car, with Dmitri right behind her, Damiano drove them to their favorite restaurant for a celebration.

****

When they reached the restaurant, Dmitri pulled Dam aside and asked, “Seriously, Dam, did you invite the office to the wedding?”

“No, Dima. I swear. I had no idea, but it is a wonderful gesture. Don’t you think? I thought we’d come here with the two of you, Nagi, and Mrs. Peters for a private celebration.”

“Monkeys? Did I hear you say monkeys?” Dmitri heard behind him.

“That is correct.”

“There isn’t a monkey in the place. Leopards, wolves, bears, even a couple of cute little foxes, Dmitri Ivanovich. But no monkeys,” their boss, the chief told him.

“Perhaps not, but in their human forms they can certainly act like a bunch of monkeys.”

“You should try it from behind my desk,” the gigantic bear-shifter muttered. “Let’s get this party started. I’m sure there are several of us who could use a drink.”

Watch for The Russian later this spring.

In the meantime, check out the other two books in the series.

Black and white

Yes, editing is nearly complete on the next book from Gambler’s FollyThe Russian.

Dmitri is a wolf shifter and over 500 years old. He once had a soul-mate, but she 200 years ago. Maybe the universe is giving him another chance at happiness.

Danni works in the office at the agency. Coming home one night, she was surrounded by a group of gang members and expected to end up in the hospital–or morgue. Until Dmitri stepped in.

Now it appears they are soul-mates. But she can’t become involved with anyone. She has to care for her mother.

How about an excerpt?

“You should have a woman of your own status, not a little nobody like me. I’m not even

sure how I feel about sex after the assault. Maybe you should finish your work here and

leave. Forget me.”

“There is no one of my status on any planet I’ve visited. As far as I can tell, I am unique.”

“Danni,” Karianna said, “I think you’re forgetting something. If you two are mates, he

can’t simply leave and forget. And if I ever hear you refer to yourself as a nobody again,

I’ll kick your ass.”

“Maybe we’re not mates,” she said. “The whole scent thing doesn’t seem to bother me

right now.”

“And most of that is due to the additional air scrubbers Dam brought up for the evening,”

Kari answered. “Why don’t you come sit next to Dima and try to tell me that.”

“What?”

“Come sit next to Dima and try to carry on a conversation.”

“Fine. I don’t know what all the fuss is about.”

Changing places with Karianna, Danni got comfortable until the scent of autumn leaves

and musk crept over her. Visions of the deep forest at sunset took over her thoughts,

as her nose picked up the earthy, musky scent, with its leather and tobacco overtones.

Heat began to pool at her center as thoughts of being taken by this man played scenes in

her mind.

“Danni?” she heard as if from a distance. “Planet to Danni, come in.”

Shaking her head, she looked over at the amused Karianna. Almost afraid to look, s

he glanced over at Mishka. His knuckles were white on the armrest of his chair, and his

teeth were clenched, as he fought down the mating urges.

Forcing her body to obey, Danni rose from the table and stumbled into the kitchen.

She needed air, but every breath brought her Mishka’s scent. This could not be happening.

“All right, Danni. The scrubbers are back on and you can have your seat back,” Karianna

said a moment or two later. “Now, do you want to argue some more or shall we decided

on a course of action?”

Have you ever had an idea in the middle of the night, written it down, and placed it in your ideas folder? And then forgotten all about it?

Yeah. One of those ideas.

While sorting through files yesterday, I came across a folder with book ideas in it, but it wasn’t in the place it should have been. Opening the file, I recognized the other ideas, but I couldn’t remember the last one.

Turns out it was another story line for the Speranza Series. Idea title–An English Werewolf on Gambler’s Folly.

Like I didn’t have enough on my plate from Gambler’s already…

Watch for The Russian later this year. It will be Book 3 from Gambler’s Folly, in the Speranza Series.

Next up after that will be a book in the Esperance Series–Talents–the continuing story of Viviane and introducing the new heir of Belfort. Connell is a ten year old little boy who must now train to become ruler of his clan. And he’s not happy…

I know, I know.

It has been a while.

But I have been writing. Honest!

How about an excerpt from Master of the Fleet? And maybe a snippet from a WIP?

MASTER OF THE FLEET

Anne-Marie was tired from the trip, but where was she to sleep? They’d brought Richard to the first

room they could reach when he’d collapsed. This was a single room, with one small bed

and a sofa.

Richard was stretched out on his back taking up the whole bed. There wouldn’t have been room

for her, anyway, in such a tiny bed. His feet were sticking out the end and his right arm was on the

verge of falling off the bed. Everything from his elbow down hung out in mid-air.

Rummaging in the wardrobe, she found a blanket she could use. Maybe she could get another

one from the desk. Carefully closing the door, she went  to ask the clerk for more blankets,

which he generously provided her.

“I am sorry about the room, Madame. We had a different one reserved for you on the second

floor. The men who carried your husband from the coach didn’t know who he was, so we put

him in there. I’d no idea he’d still be sleeping. Is there anything else I can get you?”

Back in the room, she made up the sofa, changed into a nightgown, and went back to sit

with Richard. His arm over the edge of the bed couldn’t be comfortable. As she tucked it

back up under the covers, she remarked on how heavy an arm is when it’s totally limp.

She knew he’d have been more comfortable if he’d had time to change out of his travel clothes,

but doubted she could undress him. Instead, she unbuttoned the first few buttons on his shirt,

loosened his belt and trousers, and tucked the covers around him again.

Why was she so concerned? She wasn’t in love with the man. True, he had been

very kind to her, both before their marriage and since. Maybe she simply needed him

to get back home. Once there, they would have to sort out a lot of things,

but they had to get there first.

It couldn’t be love. That door had been closed for ages. She had given up all hope for love

a long time ago. When she fell asleep and nearly toppled off the chair, she crawled under

the blankets on the sofa. Richard still lay as one dead. What would he be like

when he finally woke up?

THE RUSSIAN–Book 3 from Gambler’s Folly

If it hadn’t been for her scent, he would have been fine. Lilacs with honeyed-

vanilla and white musk had wrapped around him softly. Hazel eyes under blonde curls had

drawn him in. He’d thought, after all this time, he had control over his urges.

What had possessed him to kiss her?

Her mouth now, there was a treat. Fresh raspberries and sweet white wine still teased

his palette. Between her scent and her taste,he was one messed up wolf. He wanted

to run through the forest, roll in the leaves, and howl to his pack mates

about this delicious female he’d met.

No, he wouldn’t see her again. He didn’t need a relationship.

Life around him was too uncertain.

Besides, he’d had a mate long ago and, when she’d died, she’d taken his heart to her grave.

So, have you read the books in my Esperance Series? How about a brief look?

JARETH, FIRST LORD

Book 1 of the series introduces Jareth, the leader of his clan, and Viviane, the lady he hopes to win. He is a widower and she a widow, who isn’t sure she can ever open her heart again.

VIVIANE, FIRST LADY

Book 2 continues the story after their marriage. Viviane has developed Talents she shouldn’t have. As they grow stronger, she must learn to control them before she becomes a threat to everyone around her. In the meantime, she has to attend her brother’s trial, and the emotional stress may well cause an out-of-control outburst of Talent.

MORGAN-The Pixie and the Green Man

Book 3 brings the focus to a girl introduced briefly in Book 1. Morgan came to Clan Brannach during the choosing, hoping to leave the abuse and molestation behind. But a few short months after changing clans, she is attacked and would have been raped if not for the two men who stepped in to rescue her.

Deciding men weren’t worth the effort, she resists the attentions of the handsome and humorous James Ferguson. But those delightful dimples and his charm are so captivating.

Fantasy, romance, humor, psychic abilities… What more could anyone want?

All three books are available through Amazon, Smashwords, or any major book seller.

Excerpt from Viviane, First Lady

Bring help, Viviane. This is where I am.”

A simplified map showing the manor, his location, and a line tracing the way

between them appeared behind her eyes.

“See the map. Know the map. You can find me, and it is so. You have the ability. Make it so.”

Jareth, are you alright?” she asked him.

I’ll be fine. Just bring help to get me home.”

She must have yelled or screamed when she saw Jareth fall, because as she

turned to go get help for Jareth, she saw Annie, Gerard, and two guards

entering the room.

“Lady Viviane,” one of the guards asked, “is everything okay?”

“No! Jareth is hurt and needs help. Bring a doctor or healer, get Duncan, and

meet me in the stables. I will take you to him.”

“Milady, are you sure you’re alright? Maybe a bad dream or an after effect

of your medicine…” Annie began.

“No, it was not a bad dream! Jareth has had an accident on the way over the

mountain. His horse fell and threw him onto the rocks.”

One of the guards said, “Somebody fetch Duncan before we all go on a wild

chase for nothing. Maybe he can make sense of what she’s saying.”

At this point, Viviane became angry. She could feel her temper taking over,

yet now she didn’t care. Jareth was injured and alone.

“I am your First Lady and you will obey me! Take me to the stables,

get a doctor or healer, and bring Duncan as fast as you can before I lose the

information I have. If you won’t come with me to help your First Lord,

I will go by myself. To hell with you all!”

After Viviane and Jareth return from Clan Belfort, Viviane struggles with her Talents. But she is not alone. Her nephew, Connell, the newly chosen heir of her home clan, is having troubles along the same lines. Partly because he doesn’t understand why he needs Talents. And partly because he misses his old friends from home.

At the Gather in Belfort, some of those old friends, jealous of who he has become, accuse him of cheating at a ring toss game. When they grab him and start to harm his friend Nelly, he reacts by using his Talent to protect her. He is sure his grandfather will be angry.

Let’s check in on Connell.

“But I wasn’t supposed to get into any trouble,” he explained.

“As far as I can tell, you didn’t go looking for trouble. Trouble came looking for you.”

By the time they caught up with the family, they were making their way toward the entrance

on the way to the manor.

“First Lord,” the guard called.

“Yes, Greg? What is it?”

“I’m sorry, sir,” Connell spoke up. “I was in a bit of trouble today.”

“Before he takes responsibility, he did nothing wrong, sir,” the guard said.

“Perhaps someone can tell me what happened,” the first lord said, looking around for someplace

to sit. Finding a bench close at hand, he sank down onto it. With a shake of his head, he looked

up at Greg.

Once again the man explained the situation, and once again emphasized that it wasn’t

Connell’s fault.

“Well, Grandson, if it wasn’t your fault, why would you take responsibility?”

“If Nellie hadn’t been with me, she wouldn’t have skinned her knee and been scared.”

“Did you do anything to warrant their accusation?”

“No, sir. Cheating is wrong. I just got lucky.”

“Did Nellie like the teddy bear?” his grandfather asked with a twinkle in his eye.

“Yes, sir. She’s naming him after me. But I used my Talents to keep her from getting hurt.

Was that wrong?”

“Connell, was there any other way to keep him from kicking her?”

“Um, no. Two of the other boys held my arms, and I couldn’t have reached her before she got

kicked.”

“Then you did well. How do you feel about your Talents now?”

Connell stood and pondered the question for a few moments.

“Think about it this way. When you are first lord, and someone comes with the intent to harm

either members of your clan or clan

property, wouldn’t you like to know you have the ability to do something about it?”

“Of course.”

“Are you beginning to understand the use for Talents?” he asked softly.

Looking deeply into the first lord’s eyes, Connell nodded. “Yes, sir. I am. But I still didn’t cheat.”

“I never thought you had, Grandson,” the man said seriously. “Let’s go clean up and see what we

have for dinner.”
