I mean the one in the world of Lord Sir Richard Lemarnier. The one on the Northwestern coast of what we call the USA, in an alternate reality.

Let me tell you about this world. Grab a cuppa and join me!

The world of Richard and Anne-Marie is a world of magic. Most people are born under two different elements of magic. One corresponds with the year in which they are born. The other from the month. Most people have very little ability and can’t actually train to use them effectively.

But for those who can, they are a boon to society. Crops are grown with the aid of people who can control water and earth to nurture plants. Ships are guided and protected by those with control over wind or water. Suspects are questioned by those trained to use their abilities with spirit.

Those who are adepts use magic to bind contracts, blood oaths, and vows. Priests having abilities with heaven and spirit bind marriages using the elements of creation in the presence of heaven. Vows or oaths bound with blood carry their own penalty when broken.

Richard Lemarnier is Master of the Fleet for his family’s shipping firm, as well as the owner since his father died. In this capacity, he controls wind and water to help shape the weather when necessary to help his ships out at sea. With a little ability inherited from his mother, he has a bit of telepathy to use as well.

Imagine seeing the various air currents as slightly different colors or textures and being able to manipulate them. You could create a small breeze or a raging storm, depending on how much power you had to call on. And the same with water. You can speak to it and bend it to your will, shift the currents or calm the waves. With control over both wind and water, you could create a storm or calm one.

Richard had fallen for Anne-Marie and asked her to marry him, but she kept putting hiim off. Not refusing, exactly, but not accepting either. So when she asks him to come with her back to her home kingdom for the fall festivals, he figures it would be a good time and place to ask once more.

But after too much wine and excitement, things get out of hand at the feast, leaving them bound not only by marriage vows but by a blood oath, as well as an oath of fealty from Anne-Marie to Richard. He is bound to be her husband and protector, and her loyalty is sworn to Richard. Onlh an adept of at least the rank of Baron can unbind the spells.

Anne-Marie had no intention of marrying Richard. But how can she escape now, with all the spells binding them together?

And who is trying to destroy Richard’s company? Anyone with the kind of power this enemy shows should have been bond by the guild oath, forbidding them to do harm with their abilities.

What will it take for Richard to win his lady’s heart and keep his company safe from attack on the high seas? And are the two related?

Read MASTER OF THE FLEET this weekend!

How about a snippet?

Those in the wedding party removed their shoes to stand on earth. With hands raised, eyes to the heavens, the priest began to intone the opening words of the marriage oath.

“In the presence of God, I call upon heaven and earth, water and fire, wind and spirit, to witness the union of Lord Sir Richard LeMarnier and Anne-Marie Desplaines…”

They made it through the ceremony without complications. He used the ring he’d bought for their betrothal for her wedding ring. She used his signet ring for his. These represented Earth. Candles lit during the ceremony represented fire, the couple was sprinkled with water, and the kiss represented an exchange of spirit. As the ceremony continued under the stars, the evening breeze swept around them, caressing them and adding its seal to the union. Arcane symbols bound their vows to each of the elements.

Bound by God and the six elements of creation, their human representatives bearing witness and completing the perfect ring of seven, the marriage was sealed by the priest, and recorded.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.

Yes, Jareth First Lord has been out for quite a while, but it’s still one of my favorite stories. So I thought I’d share one of my favorite scenes with you.

For a little background, Jareth is the First Lord, or ruler, of Clan Brannach. His wife died in childbirth about three years before this story began. After meeting Viviane during negotiations with her father, First Lord of Clan Belfort, he includes her in the Choosing, taking her back to his clan hoping to win her heart. He hadn’t known she was a member of the ruling family.

She is a beautiful woman, with black hair and dazzling blue eyes. But temper? She was a feisty on. Oh yeah. She had temper to spare. But Jareth thought he had a chance at taming this wildcat named Viviane.

Viviane is the youngest daughter of the ruling house of Belfort. Her husband died about six months before this story begins. Though she would rather do nearly anything else, she may be forced to move back to her father’s house unless she can find someone to buy the shop and cottage she’d shared with her husband. But when Jareth chose her as part of the spoils, another option was thrust upon her.

She wasn’t ready for a relationship, though she was growing fond of Jareth. But he could get on her nerves when he pulled his high and mighty act. First Lords. Always thought they knew what was best for everyone.

Yeah, she’d see about that. It was about time he met someone who would stand their ground and give him a piece of her mind.

Here’s the excerpt.

“Annie, I’m so tired I want to sleep forever, or for at least a week, and it’s only the second day of the Gather. Jareth wants me to come with him but I’m not sure I can keep up the pace,” Viviane admitted, so tired she was almost in tears.

“Now, now, milady! Let’s get you upstairs and into a hot bath to begin with. No, now don’t argue with old Annie. She knows what’s best.”

A few minutes after she’d slipped into her bath, Annie insisted on some calming herbal tea, just enough sweetening in it to bring out the flavor. Then, pulling a stool up to the end of the tub, she began to brush Viviane’s hair for her like her nanny had done when she was a little girl.

“Annie,” she protested, “you don’t need to do this. Really, I’ll be fine with a bath and good night’s sleep.”

“Now, Viviane, you relax and drink your tea. A little pampering never hurt anyone. What you need is a bit of family here, which you don’t have. So you’ll have to accept me as a substitute. See? You’re feeling better already.”

She was, too. Something about the warm tea, the bath, and the rhythmic brushing pulled the tension out of her body. Finishing her tea, she relaxed for a while, nearly dozing off.

“There now, I’ll bet you can sleep and feel just like new in the morning,” she heard Annie say, as if from a great distance.

“Thank you so much Annie,” she told her, pulling herself out of her reverie. “You are a gem and I’m so glad you’re here. If there’s anything I can do to repay your kindness, let me know.”

Annie said goodnight and saw her tucked in before she left and turned out the lights. Viviane hadn’t slept so well in years.

The next morning Jareth was up early. Viviane, though, had had enough. Deciding to stay in bed and rest, she was happily on her way back to sleep when someone knocked at the door.

“Viviane? It’s Annie. Lord Jareth wants to know when you’ll be ready to leave.”

“I’m not going, Annie. I simply can’t. Give my apologies to the First Lord.”

A few minutes later there was another, stronger knock at the door. “Viviane, come on. We’re going to be late!”

“No, Jareth, I’m not going to be late. I’m not going. Please extend my apologies to your guests.”

“This is not acceptable, Viviane. You knew the requirements beforehand. You will be up and ready in ten minutes.”

Now she was fully awake and mad. How dare he give her orders?

“I beg your pardon, Lord Jareth, but exactly who do you think you are? I did not come here to be ordered about like a servant. I told you I might not manage the entire week and I can’t. Go away!”

“You will be ready in ten minutes or you will go to the Gather just the way you are. A bargain was struck and you will be held to it. Now get ready!”

Fearing he might carry out his threat, Viviane snarled and stormed out of bed. She dressed to an accompaniment of slamming doors and drawers before attacking her hair with the brush.

Jareth was pacing the hallway when she opened her door. “It’s about damned time! There will be no more of this nonsense. You will accompany me at the Gather each day and at least appear like you’re with me willingly. Is that clear?”

“Do stop, Jareth. Nobody’s impressed.”

“I beg your pardon,” he said in a dangerous tone of voice.

“Yes, okay, fine. You’ve made your point, now shut up. We’re late. Remember?”

If anyone noticed a bit of frost in the air they said nothing, but there did seem to be more space around them than usual. It was nearly halfway through the day before Viviane began to calm down. How had she gotten herself into this mess?

It’s that time of year to curl up by the fire with a good book and something to drink and slip into another world for a while.

So what world will you be visiting?

MASTER OF THE FLEET is FREE this weekend at Smashwords!

Set in an alternate world where magic is just part of everyday life, Richard is Master of the Fleet for the family shipping firm. With his ability as a weather-shaper to control wind and water, he helps keep his ships safe out on the open seas.

But it will take more than magic to sort out his love life.

Go on over to Smashwords and pick up a copy of Master of the Fleet, and have a wonderfully cozy weekend.

EXCERPT

“After the events of the evening, I will allow this to stand under one condition.”

“And what is the condition, Your Excellency?” Richard was careful to keep his tone respectful.

“An oath which will keep her safe and make you her protector,” the baron replied. “Draw your dagger.”

Richard did as commanded, as the baron circled the table.

“Make a small cut on your hand and on the woman’s.”

“A blood oath, Your Excellency?”

“You question me?”

“No, Your Excellency.”

With the tip of the dagger, Richard made a nick in his hand, and its twin in Anne-Marie’s. Droplets of blood beaded up in their palms.

“Clasp hands,” the baron instructed them.

Over their joined hands, the baron traced arcane symbols in the air. Tingling magic swirled around their hands to bind the oath.

“By the mingling of your blood, do you, Anne-Marie, swear absolute loyalty and obedience to Lord Sir Richard LeMarnier, on pain of death, for as long as you shall live?”

She was crying and shaking so hard Richard wasn’t sure how she was still upright.

“I do so swear,” she replied through the tears.

“And Lord Sir Richard LeMarnier, do you swear to spare her life and guard her, as her sworn protector, for as long as she lives?”

“I do so swear.”

“You will remain together, blood-bound, for as long as the oath shall stand, neither one leaving the other, nor causing harm, one to the other. Breaking the conditions set forth will bring forth the penalty. The oath can be revoked before death by the skills of a baron only. Take heed.”

He motioned for someone to bring a moist towel so they could clean their hands.

Clearing his throat, Richard said, “If you will send someone for a priest, Your Excellency, I will take this woman as my wife tonight.”

His Grace looked startled and asked, “What priest will marry you under the circumstances?”

“I think he would rather we be married than not,” Lord Richard replied. “I doubt if Anne-Marie will object. Priest or not, she will be mine this evening. Wife or whore, I care not which. Either way, she will please me well. Her life is mine to use as I see fit. If it matters to you, fetch a priest.”

“It’s your life. So be it.”

No, I haven’t quit writing… But the editing takes time. And I have two series and a stand alone line to keep going.

I have a new book with the editor right now under the Sultonna Nadine name titled Mistaken Identity. It is a romantic intrigue set in a star system with two inhabited worlds on the brink of war. And it appears their best shot at gaining the intel to avert catastrophe lies with a troublesome female prisoner Commander Romaoff is holding in his prison on Novay Kemlya.

In the Gambler’s Folly series, I’m working on the editing for Book 4–Old Flame. Kort and Liz met at university. While they were good friends, they never actually dated. Since then, they’ve both pretty much given up on love. But thirty years after university, they meet by chance, on their way to Gambler’s Folly.

From Esperance we have Talents, Book 4 in the series. This continues Viviane’s story from Book 2. She is still struggling to control her Talents, with limited success. After the commotion she caused at her brother’s trial, she is afraid of her Talents and wishes they would go away. Hence her troubles. On top of everything else, her Talents and Jareth’s will prevent pregnancy until she has a handle on her abilities, and no amount of wishing will help.

At the same time, her nephew, Connell is having troubles of his own with Talent. Only his problem is mainly getting them reawakened to the point where he can train to rule the clan in his grandfather’s stead. But at eleven years old, it’s a pretty heavy load.

And then there is Whiskey Jug Genie, which is a fun little story I’ll probably publish as Sultonna Nadine. A London apothecary shop owner and herbalist, Martin, tours the American Southeast and buys an old whiskey jug to display in his shop. But when he pulls the stopper in his apartment, a genie–or djinn as he prefers to be called–who has been trapped in the jug for a couple centuries comes out to completely disrupt his life. A redneck genie with a unique manner of speaking who is completely out of touch with the modern world.

So wish me luck on my editing and wish my editor patience and perseverance. We;ll be back to you with new reads as soon as we can.

Wishing you a pleasant weekend and splendid summer.
