CommercialThere’s a crispness in the air which is lacking in summer. Fallen leaves crunch underfoot on the sidewalk and there’s a subtle spicy-earthy scent in the air. Your nose tells you the man down the road has freshly mown hay and  autumn wild flowers are making an appearance.

Autumn breezes sweep around you on the bridge as you watch the flowing stream carry autumn leaves on a journey downstream. The quiet music of the wind in the trees is the perfect background for the setting.

It’s time to locate those sweaters and long sleeves you put away when summer came around. Jeans and corduroys are soon to be the favorites when cooler winter weather comes calling. And where are those boots you love to wear?

It’s almost time to light the first fire in the fireplace, bring in something lovely to drink, and curl up in front of the dancing light to read.

What are you reading this evening?

My editor has a new stand-alone book in hand which should be out late in October. So watch for Mistaken Identity, a fantasy romantic intrigue. Meet Krista and Michael as they seize the circumstances in which they find themselves and make it work.

And don’t forget Master of the Fleet, another stand-alone paranormal fantasy romance set in an alternate timeline. Richard LeMarnier, CEO and Master of the Fleet of LeMarnier shipping and Anne-Marie DesPlaines, the seamstress who has captured his heart have some major issues to sort through.

I’m working on the sequel to Viviane, First Lady–Connell, Heir of Belfort, Esperance Book 3. Never fear! I will answer those questions left hanging in Viviane, First Lady!

Enjoy your weekend and the cooler autumn weather. And find something good to read!

Black and whiteOK, fellow authors, give me some feedback.

You’ve finished your final draft and submitted it to your publisher. Now come the edits. Once you get to the final proof, you read through it, scrutinize it to make sure everything is good, and sign off on the final.

When your print books are released, you grab one and read through it. What? Son of a gun! You spot a mistake. How did that happen?

Does this fault lie with the editor? Or is it on your shoulders, since you signed off and accepted it as finished and complete?

My first novel, Gambler’s Folly, published through Bookstrand,  went through the process. I signed on the dotted line, and when my print books came out, I grabbed one to read.

And about two chapters in I found a mistake. It was where we had changed the wording in a particular sentence. After we’d both gone through it several times, nobody noticed that the final had the original word and the correction in the sentence.

Do I blame the editor who worked with me on the book? No. I signed off on the final proof. I admit I have trouble proofreading on the computer screen. Things always look a little different on the printed page to me.

But I was the last person to go over the proofs. I accepted what I received from the editor and called it done.

Would I work with this editor again? Absolutely! He did a fantastic job. I loved his feedback on my work.

Will I go over the finals a little more carefully next time?

I’ll do my best, but I’m as human as my editor. Every now and again, something is going to slip through the cracks.

So, what is your opinion? Do you take responsibility for the oops, or do you rant and rave at the editor who let it slide past?

I decided to own up and say, yeah, I missed that one.

What about you?

Both books are now at Amazon for Kindle for $3.99. Paperback copies are also available.

CommercialWhich do you prefer?

I love the feel of a good book, the hard cover, crisp new pages, that fresh smell of ink on paper. Or in the case of older books, there is the subtle yellowing of the pages, the musty, dusty smell from years of accumulated dust and wear.

There is something about a print book that beckons to you from the shelf as your eyes move across the rows and rows of titles, searching for that one book you must have for your evening’s entertainment.

Sometimes you’re looking for an old friend, something comfortable with no surprises. You’ve been here before and enjoyed the journey.

Other times you hope for excitement, romance, a little mystery. Maybe there’s a new world out there to visit, or a hidden corner on this one with a delectable little tale to tell.

But what about eBooks?

They have their advantages. If you travel for a living, or if your headed out for a couple of weeks, it can be difficult to carry the books you hope to read. In some places, it can be difficult to find books written in your language. If you don’t read the language of the region, you may be short of reading material.

My husband travels for work and is a voracious reader. He would need at least one extra checked bag just for books–which would get expensive.

His e-Reader is a lifesaver! He can take a whole library with him and pick and choose what he wants to read, from old favorites to new acquaintances. He isn’t destined to reread those same three books he’s been reading for the past month.

All of his favorite authors are represented, in all their genres.

When I travel with him, we each have our favorites and our to-reads with us, so we’re never without something to read. I can read at the airport while waiting to depart, read on the plane, and have something new to read around the pool when I arrive at the hotel.

Do I like eBooks? The stories are the same, no matter the format. I love being able to bring a wide assortment of books with me when I travel.

Do I prefer eBooks? No. They like the intimacy of the print books for me. There are no book covers begging to be caressed as I read. There is no scent adding to the experience of text on paper. There are no little identifying marks from where someone dripped coffee on the page while reading at the breakfast table.

Nowhere are there bite marks from the cat seeking attention, or wisps of fur between the pages from a friend who passed long ago.

Are print books a thing of the past? I hope not.

Do I offer my books in e-Format?

Yes.

There are too many reasons why people use eBooks in this day and age not to do so. Limiting your readers to a choice of either one or the other cuts you out of a good portion of the market.

Jareth, First Lord is now available for Kindle at Amazon. Watch for Viviane, First Lady for Kindle later this week.

Both are currently available in paperback as well.

What’s next? Keep your eyes open for Mistaken Identity, a romantic intrigue set in a distant star system on the verge of war.

After Mistaken Identity watch for Master of the Fleet, an alternate timeline of America, where elemental magic rules the world.

CommercialYes, Viviane First Lady is now in print! I got my box of author’s copies and pre-orders today. Now as soon as the bookmarks get here, the pre-orders can go out.

What is Viviane about?

This sequel to Jareth, First Lord picks up right after the wedding, with Jareth explaining to Viviane about the talents she has inherited from her father. And that she has to get some training before they cause problems.

But training as an adult is not an easy task and she struggles to gain the control she so badly wants and needs. Especially after they are told that she will be required to travel back to Clan Belfort for her brother’s trial for treason. Jareth had wanted to keep her away from the emotional turmoil of the trial, since the talents are tied in with emotions. And when Viviane becomes emotional, there’s just no telling what will happen.

If her days of striving for control are frustrating, her nights with Jareth are exhilarating, as they discover and explore the deeper intimacy possible for those who are talented. With the talents they both have, the earth really can move.

Black and whiteYes, it is a very chilly day down here near Atlanta. I think it has finally reached 30 degrees outside this morning. And it’s 11 am!

So, now that Viviane First Lady is in pre-sale, what am I working on?

A new novel in the raw is with my editor now. A stand alone book, not of the Esperance series, Mistaken Identity is a romantic intrigue. Krista Carlisle is a music teacher, though she’s had some military and martial arts training. But because of that training she is mistaken for something she’s not during a military strike in her home town.

Taken to their sister world, imprisoned and interrogated, they finally have to agree that she isn’t what they thought she was. Now destined to remain on this world in servitude for life, she thinks only of a way to escape.

But Commander Romanov has other plans which will make use of all that hand-to-hand training she’s had,as well as her knowledge of her home world and her ease with the social graces. Those he’s used before in this particular venture had two strikes against them. They knew virtually nothing about their sister world and they couldn’t mingle with society’s upper crust without looking out of place.

Krista could, if he can convince her to work with him for the sake of both worlds.

So, as this book goes under the knife, my other WIP is set in an alternate timeline of the American Northwest where those with sufficient ability learn to control the elements of their birth month and year to shape the world around them. Master of the Fleet is a paranormal fantasy romance–if I can shape its elements to a close…

Black and whiteYes, the sequel to Jareth, First Lord will be coming up this spring. Continuing the story of Jareth and Viviane, we read more of Viviane and of her struggles with new and previously unknown talents.

Here’s a quick excerpt!

Jareth gazed at Viviane over a cup of tea. She felt he had something on his mind, but wasn’t sure how to start.

“Okay, what is it then?” she asked. “It couldn’t be anything too awful or you wouldn’t have to think so much about it.”

“It’s something your father and I talked about when he was here for the wedding,” Jareth answered. “He noticed something about you which hadn’t been obvious to him before. He felt it was important enough to speak with me privately.”

“Something about me?” She wasn’t sure whether to be angry, insulted, or amused by this. “What could he possibly have noticed after all this time?”

“Let me begin from a different direction.” Jareth began. “What do you know about the specialties of First Lords and the ruling houses that sets them apart?”

Viviane thoughtfully sipped her tea. She’d never given it much thought. The First Lords were just First Lords. The leadership was hereditary, descending from father to firstborn son, or on rare occasions, daughter.

“I know we were brought out of the Times of Confusion by the ancestors of our current First Lords. They were the strongest families and leaders of the time and were able to unite those around them to form the clans. The clans bear the names of the first families and the lineage is traceable back to the very first lords.”

“Yes, but what gave them their strength?” he asked. “How, after all that time in confusion and anarchy, were they able to bring the people together and enforce some order?

Viviane pondered the question for a minute before answering.

“Well, I’ve heard rumors about some sort of mental ability they’re supposed to have, but I always thought it was a myth. Some of us used to make fun of it when we were children, pretending we could influence people with the power of the mind.  I never thought there was anything to it. I kind of figured if they had some kind of ability, my father and Carl wouldn’t have so much trouble keeping track of me. I could get by with nearly anything I wanted to. I would disappear for hours, hiding until I wanted to be found. It drove my father insane.”

Jareth laughed at this picture. Viviane supposed it was rather humorous, making fun of the First Lord and doing her best to mock the traditions of the family. It would probably come back to haunt her.
