Excerpt:

Dante had thought she would object to his touch, but though she remarked about having his arm through hers, she did nothing to change it. For a long time now, they had strolled easily through the old olive grove arm in arm, in peaceful silence, enjoying each other’s company.

At least, he was enjoying hers, and if she wasn’t happy, she would have said something, surely. Where her arm touched his, he felt a warmth and a tingle which threatened to overwhelm him. Between that and her scent, he could have died and gone to heaven. But with the thoughts he had going through his head, he was probably headed a different direction. He would need to go to confession again before the wedding for sure.

They had turned and were heading back toward the manor when she sighed and let her head lean onto his shoulder. As he tried to figure out this latest twist in their acquaintance, she took a deep breath and held it for a moment before letting it go.

The evening breeze had picked up after they made their turn and it was beginning to be chilly outside. Moist, warm earth met chilled evening air and gave up part of its warmth as mist rising from the ground. Among the silvery trees, this only increased the sense of magic in the air. As he was now downwind, it also brought her scent to him more strongly, like he needed anything else to deal with.

Pressed tightly against him, he wondered if she felt chilled by the night air. She wore a long skirt, but the blouse was thin summer cotton, with short, off-the-shoulder sleeves. Thinking about those shoulders made him want to leave love bites across them and then further up the luscious column of her neck. Her shiver brought him back to the present.

He still had on his jacket from dinner, so he gently opened the front of it and drew it around her shoulders—bare as they were—so that his arm was around her. Thinking she would object, he was surprised when she snuggled in and put her arm around his waist.

God, help me, he prayed. I’m only human.

Before they left the grove, he stopped and looked down into eyes which held questions.

“In case you decide you’d rather not be seen with me, we can separate here,” he said.

“I suppose we would draw attention, wouldn’t we?” she answered, but with a sparkle of mischief in her eyes.

“But before we go our own ways,” he began before pulling her closer and forking his fingers up through her hair, “I would like to settle the question.”

“What question?” she asked.

Leaning closer, his hand in her hair suggested she turn her face up toward his. With his lips nearly touching hers, he waited for her permission, which she gave him by pressing up on her toes to close the distance.

Yes, her lips were as delicious as he’d hoped, like ripe cherries and sweet wine. His kiss lingered, wishing it would never end. Her taste combined with her scent made his head whirl. And he was not prepared for her lips to part and for the tip of her tongue to invite him in.

Finally parting, they gazed at each other in astonishment. “Dio! What are we going to do?” Angela asked, searching his face.

“I don’t know, but I have to have you.”

“Yes. And I need you. I’ve never felt this way before.”

Their next kiss was passionate, with her back against one of the ancient trees, her arms around him, and all those curves yielding to his body.

“Angela, I must go and compose myself before I meet any of the others.”

“I may need a walk to recuperate from our walk.”

“I won’t join you. Things could go much further than either of us needs right now.”

“Probably so. Buona notte, il mio amore,” she said quietly.

“Sogni d’oro, mio angelo,” he answered. Sweet dreams indeed. His were going to be something, but he doubted sweet would come into it anywhere along the line. And she had called him “my love.”

How about a little something from Master of the Fleet?

“She never promised marriage. She never intended to marry, after what life had shown her. Men were animals, who could be amusing or entertaining. On the other hand, they could be violent and perverse, especially when drunk. As long as they were pursuing her, they were on their best behavior. Once they’d captured the prize, it would be a different story. Why take the chance?

“It became a game. How much could I get before it was time to move on?”

“You’re a greedy little whore, aren’t you?”

“That’s not fair! Once I left the travelers, I never slept with anyone again, until last night with you. After being forced to bed anything that came along, I have no interest in sex.”

“So you held out hope and took them for everything they had.”

“Yes. And I made a good living at it, as well as the sewing.”

“What happened this time?”

“You did. You had enough money to take me home, so I could gloat. I wanted to look down my nose at the people who’d said I could never leave and know they were wrong.

“But after a little too much wine, and a bit too much excitement, things got out of hand. You sounded too much like those I’d run away from years ago and I snapped.”

“What do we do now?” Richard asked. “Will you share my bed willingly as my wife? Or will you simply tolerate my advances and send your mind roaming?”

“We’re bound by oath, marriage, and blood oath, Richard. I must stay with you. As your wife, I must share your bed. Will I ever enjoy it? I doubt it.””

Black and whiteI’m excited about MASTER OF THE FLEET! With a little luck, it will be out by the middle of December.

In the meantime, here’s a little preview for you.

In her younger days, before she gave up the hope of a better life, she had dreamed of this kind of man. Someone tall and handsome, strong but gentle, and, most of all, kind. But he hadn’t existed in her world.

In escaping her world, she had ruined her chances of knowing true love. How could she enjoy being with a man after being used as a whore? Why would a man such as Richard want her, except as a last resort when his urges became too strong?

Somehow, she would survive. It was too late for what-ifs and happily-ever-afters, but…

He had called her Annie.

Watch for Master of the Fleet!

And this is the time of year to do it. The weather is cooler, nights are longer, and it’s nice to cuddle in front of the fire.

So what’s in store?

I have a new book coming out in December under a pen name–Sultonna Nadine. I’ve decided to use Mellie Miller for my series, but Sultonna for the stand-alones. So watch for Master of the Fleet.

How about a little excerpt?

“Milord, are you Lord Sir Richard of Côte d’Or?” the lad asked nervously.

“I am.”

“There is a priest to see you and your lady, sir. If you’ll follow me.”

Looking at Anne-Marie, he saw true fear in her eyes. That was too damned bad. She had made her bed, now she would lie in it and please him. How many times had she played this game?

He rose from the table and motioned for Anne-Marie. The lad led them out of the banquet hall and into a small guest room

“Lord Richard? I’m Père Michel. His Excellency sent for me,” the priest began.

“I’m sorry to have called you out on such short notice, Père,” Richard told the man.

“This is all very unusual, milord. Perhaps you would enlighten me as to the circumstances surrounding this event.”

Sighing deeply, Richard gave his account of the trip, the festival, and the evening, as concisely as possible. He tried not to show prejudice. After all, the mere facts of the matter were enough.

Père Michel stood silently for a moment after he had finished, digesting the information. With a nod of his head, he turned to Anne-Marie.

“Is there anything you would like to add, refute, deny, or show differently?” he asked.

Anne-Marie was quiet for so long Richard thought she would deny everything. But looking from him to the priest, she shook her head, and in a small but clear voice said, “No, Père. Nothing to add or refute. I wish I had held my temper. Truly I do. I don’t think I would have killed him. But aside from that, the facts are much as he stated them.”

“Do you have regrets?” he asked.

“I regret my actions earlier this evening, yes,” she said.

“Milord Richard, you have had some time to think this through and calm yourself. Are you certain this is what you desire?”

“Yes, it is,” Richard answered flatly.

“Milady, will you marry willingly? If you will not, speak now. I will not bind you unless you are willing, no matter the cause.”

Again she was quiet for a moment.

“Considering the alternatives to marriage, I wed willingly. Had events not transpired as they had, I would answer differently. But I will wed Lord Richard, if he wills it.”

“Is there anything else I should know before we begin? If not, bring out your witnesses and we will conduct the ceremony.”

Richard had nothing else to say and apparently Anne-Marie didn’t either. Once the witnesses were present, the ceremony began. The group passed through the front gates into the courtyard, to stand in the presence of the heavens.

Those in the wedding party removed their shoes to stand on earth. With hands raised, eyes to the heavens, the priest began to intone the opening words of the marriage oath.

“In the presence of God, I call upon heaven and earth, water and fire, wind and spirit, to witness the union of Lord Richard LeMarnier and Anne-Marie Desplaines…”

They made it through the ceremony without complications. He used the ring he’d bought for their betrothal for her wedding ring. She used his signet ring for his. These represented Earth, the metal having come from the ground. Candles lit during the ceremony represented fire, the couple was sprinkled with water, and the kiss represented an exchange of spirit. As the ceremony continued under the stars, the evening breeze swept around them, caressing them and adding its seal to the union. Arcane symbols bound their vows to each of the elements.

Bound by God and the six elements of creation, their human representatives bearing witness and completing the perfect ring of seven, the marriage was sealed by the priest, and recorded.

As their wedding had been unplanned, Richard was startled when a fanfare blared and their union was announced as they returned to the banquet. Anne-Marie must have been as shocked as he was. His arm around her waist kept her from falling, as she stumbled through the entrance.

Yes, it’s November, which means it is once again time for NaNoWriMo. I’ve joined NaNo several times in the past, and would like to have participated this year. Alas, time constraints will not allow it this year.

My very best wishes to all those authors out there who are participating. It is a real blast, and if you’ve been trying to get a book started, this is a great way of doing it.

50,000 words in one month? Yes, it can be done.

So, good luck to everyone who has signed up for this adventure. You will have days when the words just fly into the manuscript like magic, and days when pulling words out of the ether is like pulling teeth. But you’ll get there!

Have a great time with NaNoWriMo. Hopefully, I’ll see you there next time.

Until then, may your words flow as if by magic, with just a bit of hocus-pocus on your part.

Well, you know me. I can’t work on one thing at a time…

However, Master of the Fleet is with my editor, as is The Russian, so you know she has her hands full. Gotta love her. She loves a challenge.

Master of the Fleet is a stand-alone set in the late 1800’s of the American Northwest. Richard LeMarnier thinks he’s found the woman of his dreams, but finds he’s been played. All she was after was what she could con out of him with her hints at a relationship before she moved on to another mark.

The Russian is the third book in the Speranza Series from Gambler’s Folly. Dmitri, a wolf-shifter, has been around for quite a while. At least 500 years. Two hundred years ago his first soulmate died, leaving him alone and wishing for death to take him.  Since then, he’s been a lone wolf, never seeking  a relationship, until a chance meeting on Gambler’s Folly brings him a second chance at happiness.

Master of the Fleet should be out right after Thanksgiving, so keep an eye out for it. And The Russian should be available after the turn of the year.

In the meantime, check out my other books at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Smashwords.
