They say March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb, but in this case I believe they are mistaken. Mother Nature was definitely having a temper tantrum last night. We had thunderstorms all night, which resulted in lightning running in on the phone lines.

With the phone system taken out, the DSL blasted, two desktop computers and a laptop out of commission, this morning has been quite busy. Fortunately the rest of the house wasn’t damaged, and using my mobile as a hotspot we are in communication with the rest of the world.

My husband, wizard that he is, has gotten the phones back online with a temporary fix. Let’s here if for wizards! Of course, with all the outages around, the carrier won’t be able to come out and do a proper job until early next week.

After all the fireworks last night, today is beautiful and sunny, which was not expected after looking at the forecast yesterday. I guess Nature got her ill temper worked out last night and decided to give us a break for a day or two.

Fortunately, all my book files and WIPs are backed up on a thumb drive, so in case of something like this, I’m covered. With any luck at all, I’ll have one of those WIPs finished and ready for its first edit next week. Keep your fingers crossed…

How about an excerpt? An early peek at this work in progress?

LADY CALLOWAY

In a country that’s not quite England, and a town which just misses being Victorian London, Kerrick Calloway trudged wearily up the walkway to his home.

“Paradise preserve me,” Kerrick muttered, shaking his head and running his fingers through his sandy brown hair. Hadn’t today been aggravating enough already?

His wife greeted him with a kiss which barely grazed his cheek, irritating him even more.

“What’s wrong?” Liora, his wife asked, her gray eyes stormy and troubled. “Why are you angry?”

Shrugging her shoulders under her thick auburn hair, she began to turn away, as she waited for his answer. His arm shot toward her, his hand grasping her jaw firmly as he turned her to face him.

“Why? I just want to know why I can’t have a proper kiss from my wife. After working all day, it would be nice to feel my wife cares for me, instead of feeling she simply tolerates me.”

Releasing her with disgust, he started toward his study.

“I don’t know what you mean,” Liora replied. “Of course, I care for you. Every day I meet you at the door with a kiss.”

“You call that a kiss?” he shouted, turning back towards his wife. “That’s the sort of kiss you’d give to a brother or father, not the kiss a husband expects from his wife.”

“What’s the difference? I greet you each and every day to show you I love you. Does the kiss matter so much?”

“Yes, it does matter that much!” he shouted in anger. “A man expects a few niceties when he gets home, and a proper kiss from his wife is one of them.”

“Why are you going on so much about a kiss? You know I love you.”

“Do I?” Kerrick asked, exasperated. “And how am I supposed to know that? Your kisses are sisterly at best, unless I press the issue. And in our bed, half the time I feel I’m committing rape. You agree to sleep with me, but show no passion for me. Can you even feel passion?”

Suddenly wanting to know if she could show anything at all, he pulled her to him roughly, one arm firmly around her waist, the other twined in her hair turning her face to his. He kissed her savagely at first, his mouth hard on hers, demanding, before his kiss became more sensual. At first she tried to struggle free, and then, for a brief moment, he felt the beginnings of awakening arousal, before she stiffened into her usual stance—endurance.

“Don’t, Kerrick,” she pleaded with him as he released her. “Please, never do that again. I can’t bear it.”

Maybe you’ve heard of Gambler’s Folly. And maybe you’ve wondered where the idea came from. So sit back, with a cup of something relaxing while I tell you the story.

Way back when, in the age of the dinosaurs, there was a song done by the Kingston Trio called South Coast. In the song, a man wins his wife in a card game. My husband being a Kinston Trio fan had been listening to some of their music one day, and the thought occurred to me that it would be difficult for that to happen in this day and age.

Wouldn’t it?

So the idea was settled into my brain and I couldn’t get it out. What if it was on another world, where there was a strong criminal syndicate, which could bend the rules to fit the situation?

Once I sat down to start writing, the story evolved from Karianna’s husband losing a card game in one of Gambler’s Folly’s casinos and betting his wife against his debt.

Which he lost.

The second book, Dante’s Angel, I wrote because I liked Dante’s character in the first book and wanted to explore his life and personality. Since he was one of Damiano’s right hand men, he would most certainly go with him to Earth for the church wedding. And perhaps he could meet a love of his own.

The Russian, Book 3, I wrote after seeing a photo of someone who just looked like a character who would fit right in to the rest of the bunch on Gambler’s Folly. A Russian rapper, he looked like the perfect match for a wolf shifter, to go along with Damiano’s leopard.

How about a little excerpt from Dante’s Angel?

Dante had waited as long as he could before he left for the shuttle. He’d never been off-planet before and was homesick before they even left. The rest of the party was already on board and enjoying the amenities before he even got to customs.

On top of it, the whole reason for the trip was the wedding, yet another reminder that he was single and had no prospects. And here was Damiano, with everything in the world going for him, going to Earth to marry his mate, his bond-mate. It just wasn’t fair.

What was wrong with him? He glanced at his reflection in one of the large plate windows. All right, he wasn’t as tall as Damiano, Marco, or Paulo, but he wasn’t a midget. He was six feet tall and around one hundred eighty-five pounds, with no fat to spare. Dark hair and dark eyes completely the look, from his Mediterranean heritage.

He’d been told he could be mistaken for Damiano’s younger brother, but it didn’t seem to do him much good. He was awkward in crowds and women tied his tongue in knots before he even started talking. He hadn’t had a date in over a month, and now he was going to a wedding on a planet he’d never seen.

Sighing deeply, he answered the questions at the customs desk, handed over his papers, jumped through all the hoops, and finally boarded the shuttle.

“May I help you?” the older man asked.

“Yes. I’m trying to find my berth,” Dante said.

“Ah! Take the lift to the fourth level, turn right, and it will be on your right.”

“Thanks.”

Trudging to the lift, he followed the instructions, used his pass card on the door, and took a look around.

His suite was nearly as big as his apartment. He’d have to thank Damiano for his generosity. Of course, they would be on the shuttle for a week. At least he wouldn’t go stir crazy. He stowed his luggage in the wardrobe and checked the time.

Pushing the button on his communicator, he checked in with Marco.

“Did you have any trouble, Dante?”

“No, sir. Just huge crowds of people. But I’m in my room now, so everything is good.”

“All our rooms are across the hall from yours. Damiano suggested we all get together for dinner, around seven this evening. But until then, relax and enjoy the trip.”

“When do we lift off?” Dante asked.

“In about an hour. They’ll make an announcement. Follow the instructions and you’ll be fine. It’s much like flying, but the take-off is a little stronger. Don’t worry, amico. I’ve done it several times.”

With nothing else to do, a nap sounded like a good idea. Slipping out of his shoes and jacket, he dropped onto the bed and closed his eyes. Maybe he could at least dream of happy times.

So if you like paranormal fantasy romance, with big handsome shifters, check out the Gambler’s Folly series. Meet Damiano and Karianna in Book 1.

Dante and Angela in Book 2

And Dmitri and Danni in Book 3.

Yes, there will be more coming along. The next book will feature a bear shifter billionaire and a woman he knew years before when they were both at university–Old Flame.

All the books are available from Amazon, Smashwords, or most major book sellers.

Ciao for now. Have a great weekend.

What is Esperance? What makes it special?

Let’s read the prologue…

According to legend, Esperance was found by the Seekers, ancient people from old Earth with psychic abilities including remote-viewing. After millennia of abuse Earth was dying. Now her people sought new homes among the stars. With lush, rich vegetation, deep forests, and forbidding mountains this new world resembled a much younger Earth—an Earth before modern man had left his mark.

Seeking a simpler life on this unspoiled and bounteous land, they would tame this bold new world as their ancestors had tamed the rugged highlands on Earth. Learning from history, they would take from it only what they needed, preserving everything else as a pristine paradise.

Initially Esperance relied on Earth for items they couldn’t yet produce. Fabricated metals, manufactured machine parts, and advanced medicines would take years to perfect. Mining and smelting also took time to become profitable.

Once again, the abilities of the Seekers came to their aid, helping to locate mineral deposits, potable water sources and native foods to supplement their diet. They helped ease strife during the difficult times by exerting a calming effect toward those around them. Even as the colonists adapted to this new land, they grew more susceptible to its native bacteria and viruses, relying on medicines from Earth to overcome disease.

Without warning Earth’s ships stopped coming. They were then helpless when a new virus depleted their medical supplies. Thousands died in the first wave and in each subsequent wave. As equipment failed irreparably and skills were lost to the grave, society crumbled into vicious and bloody chaos.

Many decades later, the descendants of the Seekers gained enough strength to lead their people out of confusion. With skills tempered in the forges of hell, these warriors enforced their will on the remaining few, forming clans to preserve what little was left.

Refining their Talents, these First Lords passed those abilities down through the generations, down through nearly two centuries to the time of Jareth, First Lord of Clan Brannach.

So what has been going on since that time? Read the books from the series and find out about these wonderful and Talented people!

I don’t normally enter writing contests or challenges. They’re just not my thing. But recently I saw a challenge on Vocal.Media that sparked my interest.

Called The Little Black Book Challenge, it invited you to submit a short story which in some way revolved around a little black book. Why this interested me, I’m not sure.

So I sat down and wrote a short story, coming in just under the word limit–did I mention I normally write tomes?

Anyway, it has been reviewed and submitted to the challenge. Now all I need to do is get it out to the world to read.

Which is where you come in.

Go over to the challenge and take a look at it. If you like the story, please make sure to give it a Like on the page. And share it with your friends!

The Reward. By Mellie Miller at VocalMedia.
