I know everyone is having fun watching Atlanta deal with a little snow. Because really, it was just a little snow. Here where we live, about an hour and a half outside of Atlanta, we had maybe two inches. And that might be stretching it a little.

Now I grew up in snow country. We had snow from before Thanksgiving until sometime in late March. So I know about snow. I learned how to drive in it. As a matter of fact, I took my driver’s test a few days after a big snowstorm.

But I won’t drive in Georgia if there has been any snow. If you live where there’s snow every year, your state has the equipment and the trained personnel to deal with it. You have a budget for salt and sand or cinders, for snow plows and salt trucks and drivers for them.

Here in Georgia, we have snow every couple of years, maybe. So while there are some snow plows and road crews, it isn’t practical to keep a full snow crew on standby for a maybe-once-every-two-years occurrence. If you only use these trucks once every year or so, you have to have garage space and maintenance for them which could be used for something else. And if you haven’t changed the fuel in them for two years, they might not start when you need them.

If you live where there’s snow every winter, you’ve learned how to drive in it. We used to go to an empty parking lot and just practice braking, skidding, recovering from a skid and stopping on the packed snow. It was sort of fun and we learned skills that would help us out on the road.

But if you seldom get the opportunity to practice, how can you learn these skills? Because driving on snowy roads takes a completely different skill set than you’re used to.

Another problem is ice. If it’s cold when it snows, and stays cold, all you have to contend with is snow. But down here we’ll get snow, and then the temperature will rise just enough to melt part of the snow on the road. Later in the evening, this will all freeze into patches of black ice. And black ice is no joking matter.

So go back and look at the picture comparison between New York and Atlanta. Notice that the roads in New York are plowed and that the ones in Atlanta are not.  And understand that the only roads which will be plowed are the major arteries around Atlanta. Those of us out here in the country will have to wait for the sun to do the road clearing for us.

Have fun and laugh at us if you’d like. We’re laughing at ourselves and congratulating each other for making it home alive. But remember, what’s normal and expected where you’re from is completely foreign to those here in the sunny Southeast.

Stay warm and dry friends.

Ciao

Black and whiteFace it. As soon as we say good-bye to Halloween, everything looks forward to Christmas. For that matter, many of the big stores are beginning to stock for Christmas as soon as Labor Day has passed.

Are we forgetting Thanksgiving? Can’t each and every one of us find at least one thing to be thankful for this season?

For more of my musings on the subject, follow this link for my article on Thanksgiving.

Halloween has passed and stores are packed with Christmas decorations and gift ideas.

What happened to Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving is a time to step back for a moment, with family and friends, and think about our blessings during the past year. What events have given us insight or brought us joy since last Thanksgiving?

I think a lot of people rush past Thanksgiving simply because it lacks the excitement and glamour of Christmas. There are no pretty colored lights adorning the sidewalks, no snowmen or snowflakes on the storefront windows, and no beautifully decorated trees in stores or homes.

I actually heard one of our daughters step-daughters ask what the big deal was with Thanksgiving. After all, you don’t get gifts or anything. It’s just dinner.

Has our society become so selfish that unless there is something to gain, there’s no reason to celebrate? If we don’t get gifts, it’s a pointless exercise?

I would like to see our department and grocery stores spend a little time, at least, on Thanksgiving. Why can’t we have displays of table decorations for Thanksgiving featuring cornucopias, autumn leaves, and harvest themes?

How about gratitude journals, even small card-sized ones, to list what we’re grateful for this year and what we’re looking forward to in the year to come?

Yes, Halloween is fun with all the costumes and decorations. Christmas is a beautiful time of year with all the symbolism of the season and presents for family and friends.

But let’s not forget Thanksgiving. Let’s not forget to be thankful for what we have, what we’ve been given. Don’t  rush from and evening of parties and dress-up to what-did-I-get-for-Christmas.

Take a moment to reflect on what you’ve been given throughout the year. Not monetarily, but in life experience, friendship, health, and abundance.

Maybe this hasn’t been a particularly abundant year for you in terms of your bank account. The economy hasn’t been great. But if you have family, friends, a roof over your head, and food on your table, you can give thanks.

Halloween has come and gone and Christmas is on the way. But let’s not neglect Thanksgiving. Let’s make time to slow down a little, take a break, and reflect on our blessings this year.

Have a wonderful and bountiful Thanksgiving.

Black and whiteYes, indeed!  Welcome to Georgia. Yesterday I hung my laundry on the line to dry outside where it was a wonderfully comfortable 65 degrees.

This morning we woke up to a frigid 21 degrees. I have chicken-cicles out in the hen house. The dog is frantically trying to grow fur and the outside cats are begging to come inside to the warmth.

The baby guinea keets we rescued two weeks ago are now in the house, since the porch is too chilly. Our inside cats, Fogg and Masha, are sure the keets are meant to be cat snacks and are working at opening the door into the store room.

What is in store for tomorrow? Heat wave or continued wintery weather?

Either way, what are you reading tonight? Try Gambler’s Folly.

Stay warm and I’ll talk to you later,

Ciao
