I’ve been working on this WIP for the past few days, trying to get it ready for the editor. Fourth book from Gambler’s Folly, this story introduces Kort Behrens, multi-billionaire bachelor and bear shifter and his old flame, Elizabeth. Heading out to Gambler’s Folly, he intercedes in an altercation and discovers a lady friend from his university days–thirty years ago.

While they’ d been friends and had a lot of fun together,  they’d never dated seriously, so they are both surprised when interests begin to heat up. He sees no problem if romance blossoms, but she is certain she could never fit into his crazy life.

Book 3, The Russian, is currently with the editor, so watch for it later this year.

Short Excerpt from Old Flame:

“As I recall, a long time ago I threatened to spank your bottom,” he teased back.

“Your memory is correct. And I believe I dared you to try it.”

“If you keep it up, I’ll do more than try,” he said and felt his face light up.

“Yeah, right,” she answered. “Think you’re up to all that effort? Rich living

hasn’t slowed you down?”

“Not so you’d notice,” he said.

“I guess I’d better stay on my toes.”

“You’d be easier to kiss that way,” he said before he could keep the words

from coming out of his mouth.

“Who says we’re going to kiss?”

At least, this is what she said, but her face developed a

glow that hadn’t been there before, and her scent grew a little

stronger as the tip of her tongue moistened her lips.

“I do,” he told her. “At least once in this life, I’m going to taste that

pretty mouth of yours. I missed my opportunity thirty years ago,

and I’m not going to wait another thirty years.”

“Is that a challenge?”

“No, sweetheart, that’s a promise.”

Have you read Master of the Fleet?

He’s a weather shaper, controlling the elements wind and water, to keep his ships safe out at sea.

She’s the lovely lady who has captured his heart. But she has a dark secret, which doesn’t come out until she is bound to him by a blood oath and marriage vows.

How about an excerpt?

One evening about halfway through that last week, Anne-Marie looked up into his eyes. He had been morose since dinner, contemplating the journey back to the Côte, and wondering how he was going to cope with the circumstances he now faced.

“Richard, I’m sorry,” she said. “If I could go back and relive the evening of the banquet, knowing what I do now… But I can’t.”

“What do you suggest we do?” he asked angrily. “I’m bound to a woman who will never enjoy being with me, never be excited by my touch or my kiss.”

“I can’t help it, Richard. Maybe, in time, I will enjoy being touched. I don’t know.”

Sighing, Richard shook his head as he twirled the wine in his goblet. “All I ever wanted was for my wife to be my closest companion. In my bed, I hoped to bring her pleasure and make her happy to be my lover. I have no interest in simply using you to relieve my urges.”

“I will try, Richard, but I can’t promise. I never wanted to marry. Not after seeing what the worst of the drunkards do to women. I’ve seen only the scum of the world, not the cream of the crop.”

“I appreciate how you’ve shown affection when we’re out. I know it’s an act, but I appreciate the effort.”

“I’ve always enjoyed being out with you, but I won’t be a possession or a servant. I want to be my own person, not a prized catch to show off.”

“Have I ever treated you that way?” he asked as his temper began to rise.

“No, but now we’re married. The pursued has become the captured, and that can make all the difference.”

That night, when they went up to their room, Anne-Marie went into the dressing room to change for bed. Richard took the spare comforter, a blanket, and a pillow, to make up a bed on the floor.

He finished undressing as she stared at him, with her lips parted and disbelief in her eyes. If he hadn’t known better, he might have thought she was disappointed.

“Richard, please,” she tried once more.

“Bonne-nuit, Anne-Marie. Sweet dreams.”

As he tried to get comfortable on his makeshift pallet, he heard his wife get into bed, pull up the blankets, and turn over. A few minutes later, he heard her crying, muffling the sound with the bed clothes. He waited for her to stop, but she continued to sob into her pillow.

“Anne-Marie,” he called softly. “Anne-Marie?”

“Go to sleep, Richard.”

“Why are you crying?”

“I’m fine. Go to sleep,” she answered between choked breaths.

Now that Master of the Fleet is out for Kindle and in paperback, it’s time to start thinking about the next project under this name, Sultonna Nadine.

While I will have other books coming out under Mellie Miller, they are books in my two series. I’m reserving Sultonna for my standalones.

LADY CALLOWAY is already in the process. Another story in an alternate timeline, this story takes place in a London during the late 1800’s. In our story’s timeline, the Church has tremendous control over the citizens in every way. The Church and state are one governing body in the England of the time, and in Europe, which is where our story begins.

Lord Richard Calloway works in a department which liaises between the two halves of the government–the liturgical and the secular sides. His father and most of the men in his family have been confessors–individuals who can read peoples’ minds and correct them, if needed, to abolish heresy.

Liora, Richard’s wife, has been brought up in a small village to the north. Unknown to Richard, she was taught several heretical doctrines, which she still holds. If her heresy gets out, not only will she be subject to confession, he will lose his job, and possibly his life, for not turning her in as a heretic.

Taking time off to finish an interrupted honeymoon may give him the time he needs to help her understand her error and bring her back into the fold. But during their time together, they both begin to develop paranormal abilities forbidden by the church.

When Richard’s father reaches out to him, by means of one of these abilities, to tell him the confessors are coming for the two of them, not only is he confused, he is is now a hunted man with a wife to protect.

Watch here for news about LADY CALLOWAY , from Sultonna Nadine, and for new releases by Mellie Miller.

In the meantime, check out some of my other books, available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Books-a-Million, and Smashwords.

The rain has finally stopped after several days. Maybe the chickens and the garden can dry out. Nothing looks more pathetic than a chicken which is sopping wet and too stupid to go back in the hen house.

But I have had a little more time to work on my WIP–The Russian. And work is coming along on the cover art for Dante’s Angel. I hate trying to come up with images for my books. No matter what the characters look like, there is seldom anything which truly represents the people I see in my head.

I’ve decided to name the series Speranza, which is the city on Gambler’s Folly where most of the stories begin. I was originally going to name the series Gambler’s Folly, but with the first book having the same name, I thought it might be confusing.

So Speranza it is!

As soon as I have a cover, I will reveal it here and on Facebook.

What? You don’t follow me on Facebook? Shame on you.

Here’s a snippet from Dante’s Angel

“Have you heard anything about Angela?”

“A little. She is a cousin of Damiano’s, on his mother’s side. She is twenty-four and has trained as a healer for our kind.”

“Her family are shifters?” Dante asked.

“Yes, cats like us. And she’s training with Damiano’s mother, so she must be very good. The Signora only works with the most promising.”

“I guess I should stop hoping then,” Dante said, sadly.

“Why?”

“Nobody with her background would be interested in me, would they?”

“You should begin to believe in yourself,” Paulo told him. “Why would anyone else believe in you if you don’t? If you’re interested, let her know. You should see her fairly often. I think she’s helping with the wedding.”

“Maybe. I’ll think about it.”

“Now that you’ve learned to stand up straight, maybe you will stop putting yourself down at every turn. You work for the agency, in a specialized division. You don’t sweep floors in a warehouse.”

Dante opened his mouth to object, but Paulo gave him a look which said he should think over what he’d just heard before he disagreed. Instead, he nodded, thanked the man for his advice, and walked back over the rest of the party. Maybe Paulo was right. Perhaps he should take another look at his circumstances before he sold himself short.

Ciao! A domani…

Black and white

While Dante’s Angel is with my editor, I’m working on the next book in the Gambler’s Folly series–The Russian.

Here’s a little taste!

“The tall, lanky man strode through the emigration hall on Gambler’s Folly with an ease and confidence that spoke of danger. At first glance, most people assumed ex-military. At second glance they decided he was syndicate.

The shaved head, neatly groomed stubble, and ice cold eyes did nothing to dispel this impression. Neither did the expensive shirt, with the first three buttons open under an expensive and worn dark leather vest. The black denim jeans hugged him snugly over boots whose cost would have fed a family of four for six months.

Dmitri Ivanovich Volkov, otherwise known as the Russian, encouraged this impression. it had served him well for a long, long time. People left him alone, which suited him fine. he was a loner and preferred the peace that came with the image.”

Now that we’ve met Dmitri, let’s hear a little about the woman who captures his heart, Danni.

“If it hadn’t been for her scent, he would have been fine. The lilacs with honeyed-vanilla and white musk scent wrapped around him softly. Hazel eyes under blonde curls had drawn him in. He’d thought, after all this time, he would have control over his urges. What had possessed him to kiss her?

Her mouth, now. There was a treat. Fresh raspberries and sweet white wine still teased his palette. Between her scent and her taste, he was one messed up wolf. He wanted to run through the forest, roll in the leaves, and howl to his pack mates about this delicious female he’d met.”

If you haven’t read the book which began the series, Gambler’s Folly, hurry over to Amazon for your copy. Available in paperback and eBook.
