CommercialOK, it’s not raining right now, but it’s so dark it seems like it ought to be time for bed. Everything is still wet from last night’s rain, so working outside is not an option. Nor is walking Jester, our 100 pound shepherd mix mud-ball.

So next on the list is a good book. I’ve got my comfy chair upstairs in the library and several good books to choose from. There’s Child of the Loch, The Condition, or The Lost Gateway–all books that I’ve bought recently, but haven’t yet had the chance to read.

So what’s your choice today?

If you’re in the mood for romance, like a bit of mystery and the paranormal, check out Gambler’s Folly.  Here’s the blurb.

“Thinking this trip would be a vacation, Karianna’s hopes are dashed when her husband loses her in a bet—to the biggest player in the crime syndicate on the world of Gambler’s Folly. Divorced, widowed and remarried in the space of forty-eight hours, she is now the wife of the tall, dark, and extremely wealthy Damiano Leone, who won her on the turn of one hand of cards. Besides his wealth and good looks, he controls half the planet through the crime syndicate.

As she tries to adjust to her new life, Karianna becomes embroiled in the shifting power play in the underworld. After she is poisoned twice, they take a trip to the beach, which is spoiled when their beach house explodes while they dine at a nearby restaurant.

And just when she thinks life is calming down, she discovers a secret not only about her husband and his closest friends, but a secret her family has hidden for generations—which affects her future far more than the mob on Gambler’s Folly.”

While I took a break from writing, I pulled up some of the books I’ve been meaning to read. The first of these was Coconut Badger, by mark McNicol.

Coconut BadgerCoconut Badger by Mark MacNicol
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Coconut Badger was a a great read. A dark story of a troubled youth, it pulled me into the story as it gained momentum right up to the last page. This book is a page-turner. I finished it in two sittings.

They finally got everything arranged, just before dinner, so they
dressed and went down to the restaurant and gaming rooms of the
new hotel.
“What should I wear, Dam?” she asked him. “Any suggestions?”
“Let me look,” he answered, walking over to her to make his
choice. After a minute, he pulled out a slinky black number. A floorlength
gown with a halter top cut very low in front, the fabric was soft
and shimmery, almost wet looking, with sequins accenting her figure.
It clung to all her curves, the narrow skirt slit high on the side, but cut
so that it caressed her leg, showing occasional brief glimpses rather
than a full view.
The deep V-cut in the back from the crossed bodice left her bare
to the waist. She dressed as Damiano watched, nodding his approval.
Coming up behind her, his hands slid around to her breasts, squeezing
them lightly before travelling on down her body to her hips. The kiss
on the back of her neck sent chills down her spine and awakened her
libido. At her reaction, Damiano chuckled and then nipped her
shoulder with his front teeth.
“Ow! That wasn’t very nice,” she complained.
“Maybe not, but we have to go downstairs now. So try to keep
yourself in control until later, cara.”
“Me keep in control? I was just standing here minding my own

Black and whiteHow much do you love your partner?

(Excerpt from Chapter 26)

“Okay, Tiger. What is it?”
“I was just thinking about this morning, when you called me
‘honey,’ and wondering why, after a year together, this has come
about. It is nothing really. I’m just curious.”
She thought about it for a minute, sipping coffee to see if it would
jump-start her brain. “I’m not sure if I can even figure it out for
myself, Dam. It’s almost like some part of my mind was still resisting
the whole thing, you and me. Even before bonding, I was very
attracted to you, beginning to love you. Maybe not as much as I hoped
to love someone I was married to, but our circumstances were a little
He laughed, nodded his head and replied, “I suppose ‘a little
weird’ describes it pretty well.”

“Anyway,” she continued, swirling the coffee left in her cup,
“after our bonding, I felt closer to you, more comfortable with you,
and thought I loved you more than before. Maybe I did, I don’t know
now. But I’m not sure I loved you beyond physical, sexual attraction.
Am I making any sense?”
“I’m trying to understand, but am I about to be very
“Hold on. I’ve not finished. I thought I loved you, wanted to love
you. I mean, if bonding means what you say it means, we’re together
forever. I hoped to God there was love in there somewhere. But it
worried me that I didn’t seem to love you enough, or in the right
“I believe you love me,” Damiano expressed earnestly. “And I
know beyond a doubt that I love you, cara. I loved you before we
were paired, adored you, had to have you. I would have died for you,
cara, before we were bond mates. And now? More than that, I love
“I know, Tiger,” she answered softly.
